free upgrade???

I was wondering what a free upgrade means?
I have seen people say they got a free upgrade on hotels and I was just wondering

Sometimes Disney sends out e-mails or postcards offering to upgrade people to a more expensive resort at no extra charge if they call in for the offer. Other people are offered an upgrade to a more expensive resort when they check-in at their resort.

Some people will even ask for a free upgrade, but I'd be too embarassed. All the more power to those that do though.

Once we got a small upgrade from a parking lot view to a pool view w/ a priceline room at the Sheraton Safari.
