"Free" Parking - Anyone Ever Do This?

Will you share your popcorn? That way I don't have to pay. ;)

After you guys finish sharing, can I have the empty bucket? I need it so I can tell the nearest popcorn cart I spilled mine, and get a free refill. Why should anyone pay?
(besides, we all know the popcorn, soda, napkins etc. is all donated to disney anyway!)

I agree with you. That is why these people should be banned from WDW forever. On my last trip I spent over 72 hours patrolling the parking lots. We can’t leave this to the CMs! I physically blocked a few cars and killed a man with a trident. If you see someone parking illegally you should kill them with a trident.

While I appreciate your fervor, I can't get on board with the whole trident thing - so messy and heavy (plus that trident rental place totally screwed me over one time :sad2:). My family similarly disposes of the wrongful parking trash. I simply fan my children out and they merely point or gently shove the evildoer and said evildoer falls back into a deep trench that magically opens behind them. We all watch just to see how closely their shocked faces match Gaston's (we're big Beauty and the Beast fans :thumbsup2)

I'm sorry you and yours must use the trident, but maybe my family is just more magical than yours? Possibly our specialness derives from the fact that we ALWAYS stay on-site and sometimes even in moderate or deluxe, but who knows :confused3

I prefer friggin' sharks with friggin' laser beams. Yes, I taught them to walk upright, so being landlocked at Disney is not a problem.

Yeah, but the problem with the sharks is there will be a lot of red tape to get them from now on. Going forward, how do you feel about mutated sea bass?

Hi my buttercup! I've started killing people with tridents so this should cut down on parking.

Thank you so much sugardumplin!! That will save wear and tear on my car, what with not having to use my car to shove theirs out of the primo spots.

As far as the suggestions on how to get out of paying for parking goes, anyone who wants to waste that much time getting out of spending a meesley $14 has my blessing. That means less people in the parks for the 3 hours they will spend playing car scrabble.

I don't get the anger over issues like this! What do you care where someone else parks!

People are angry because it hurts them. People who stay in resorts are hurt because they don't get the parking they paid for. People who want to do it are hurt because they want to see themselves as good people and are being told they're breaking the rules, which makes them feel bad. ;)

People complaining about others breaking the rules is most common when the rules are unclear, or when the rules are unequally enforced; Disney is guilty on both counts. People also complain about others breaking the rules when they feel personally harmed by that rulebreaking, which is definitely true of people who can't find parking in the hotel where they're staying because people who aren't staying there are using the parking lot to save money.

Even at 6 kids aren't dumb and they know the difference.

Six-year-olds are not dumb, but they often do not know the difference between tattling and telling. Many ten-year-olds don't really get it. I've talked to kids in their late teens who are convinced that reporting an injury crime they witnessed is "tattling, and everyone hates a tattler." Most kids quickly clue into what rules are actually being enforced, but unfortunately that often isn't the same as understanding the difference between when harmless rulebreaking and someone doing harm. :sad1:

I have a feeling that now that this "free" parking spot has been outed online on a major website, that soon it will cease to exist.

Heck, if I were a the owner of tow truck company in that area, after reading that article I'd make an attempt to contact the owner of that parking lot.

I wouldn't be surprised if this problem took care of itself.

I purchased a submarine car so we can hide it at the bottom of Bay Lake. We scuba to Fort Wilderness, eat at Trail's end and take a moment to fill our pockets with exta fried chicken to eat in the parks. We then make sure to get a guest assistance card we don't need and go on every ride in all four parks on a one day parkhopper.

It's the only way to Dis.

A travel article that I came across this afternoon offered the following advice for avoiding the theme parks' $14 parking fee:

"Our all-time favorite spot is an unmarked overflow lot across the street from the BoardWalk Inn. Next to a Hess gas station, the lot is almost always half-empty and is a 10-minute walk to the resort."

The author then observes that you can walk to EPCOT from BoardWalk, or take a boat to DHS, or take a WDW bus to other destinations. See http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/41464600 for the full piece.

Has anyone here ever done this? I wasn't aware that any resorts had "overflow" lots, and in any case the resorts generally have security gates controlling access to the parking lot.

actually, what you want to do is park at a monorail resort. just tell the attendant you have a dining ressie at the resort. they will tell you to park in a particular lot with a temp pass for 3 hrs. when you drive thru, turn into the hotel guest parking. Be sure to bring a phony parking pass to look like the guest at that resort have.

You will be in like flynn and can take the monorail to and fro the parks.

so much easier.

NOT! just pay to park like everyone, well most everyone.

I've heard of it before. Either because it's inconvenient, or because most people see it as being dishonest, it hasn't been inundated to the point of policed... yet. :upsidedow

And we wonder why each generation seems to be more apathetic then the last. It starts with teaching the acceptance of poor behavior at a young age if it doesn't affect you directly and progresses to not reporting bullying and the like when a little older and finally to adults with no regard for how things might affect others.

I know it is difficult to manage a classroom of 6 year olds. I am not a teacher, but have volunteered in classrooms on many occasions and I wouldn't want to have to deal with it on a regular basis. However, if the rule is to only take 5 crayons at a time and little suzy took 8, one is sending a mixed message when little Tommy points it out and is then dismissed with a "mind your own business" like response. After enough times of this, little Tommy is going to "mind his own business" when little Kaitlin is getting bullied. Wouldn't it be better to foster an atmosphere where rules are enforced and doing the right thing is rewarded?
Do you really think each generation is more apathetic than the previous one? That's not my experience at all. Most of the kids I know are very well informed and concerned about issues like global economic inequalities, gay rights, the environment and so on. Certainly, much more so than my generation was at their age. Maybe it's only the kids who are so focussed on who might be cheating them, even indirectly (Johnny took 5 crayons and I only got three!!!) instead of looking out for other kids and overall justice (Hey - that kid over there didn't get any crayons - pass the crayons to her!) that are apathetic about the larger issues. In the grand scheme of things, if we all worried a bit more about helping each other than policing each other, we'd have a lot fewer issues and people to police. Even in the dangerous, dangerous world of Disney Parking lots.

Yep. Got it covered.

Only I'm interested in helping the person who paid for an expensive resort have a parking space in their own resort parking lot...... as opposed to helping someone not staying there find a way to take said spot.

Lol, it does keep people out of the park during those vital early am hours. :)

Are we related or something? Seems like I'm always agreeing with you. ;)

BWV DVC owner here...I stay primarily at BW, so am pretty conversant about the parking there. Anyone is entitled to park in that overflow lot, behind the Hess Station. But, it is a hike over to BW from there, and when you add in the time it would take to get to either Epcot or DHS from that lot, well..it's just too big an inconvenience for me. Not worth the money saved.
Same thing with parking at DTD...sure you can do it. But, the buses don't start running to the resorts early enough to get to a park for rope drop...maybe not even until close to 11:00!!! And it takes at least an hour, closer to 90 mins to go from DTD parking to a park. But, if that's what you choose to do, go for it.

As for parking at resorts and then heading to a park....can you do it? Sure you can. Are you supposed to? Jury is still out on that one. At some periods, throughout the year, there will be a sign up, at the resort parking lot area, that says parking is not provided for park access. This pretty much means you can't park there and then head off to a park unless you are paying to sleep at that resort...for that time frame.
Other times, no one will stop you from parking at a resort and then heading to a park. But, Disney only sometimes hands out 3 hr prking passes and they only sporadically tow cars. Yes, both things can happen, but they aren't the norm.

This 'discussion' has been done to death. It just isn't that big a deal. I only wish that when articles like this come out, they also made it clear that using 'alternative' methods of getting to parks when getting 'free' parking, is not very fast or efficient!!

:thumbsup2 Nail on the head.

Nothing like a good ol' discussion to bring out the Disney Ethics Committe, lol.
I'll go back to lurking.

Ok, carry on... popcorn::

That I like! It has pizazz! I can even overlook the messiness that is likely created by this form of parking lot policing. My only concern is if you're paying for all of the spaces that a vehicle large enough to carry these amazing creatures would require. It would pain me to have to send you and your friggin' sharks into the abyss over an ironic parking violation :sad2:

LOL! I'm good with it. Having 2 teenagers and one wanna-be teenager at home, I'm ALWAYS good with someone agreeing with me. It's such a novelty! :lmao:
