FREE Online Learning and Opportunities to Stem Boredom!!!

Day 1 of "epic homeschooling" went well. He told all his friends (online) that he was doing it and said it was more fun than regular school. Now that may be the one-on-one attention or the excess amount of recess, who knows! But he did a presentation on covid-19, some math worksheets, math prodigy, razkids for reading, duolingo for french, and a lot of active time. We took the dog for a walk and went to the park to play basketball (no one else was around). I'm tired but he's happy so it's all good! Now for the books on cursive to arrive so we can add that. And I will add on some of the sites you all are mentioning as well, anything to keep busy. While Ontario says it's only two extra weeks, I am betting it will be longer based on all the other provinces.

Just came across a whole list of sites .. poked around , not sure how any of them are but i can tell you that the typingclub one had my heart racing as i tried to "win the game (guess I'm not as good as i thought!)

I loved trying the typing lessons. I have been typing at work for years and my coworkers are amazed at how fast I can type without looking at the keyboard. We have a lot of people who are 2 finger typers or look at the keyboard. Guess taking typing in school paid off. I am going to have to play on that site more.

I took medical dictation and was a transcriptionist for awhile so my typing skills are fast... people at work always comment on it! I can take word for word notes in a lot of meetings... I asked kiddo if he was interested but he feels his skills are good enough lol.

TVO will be having shows and online stuff for school aged kids because of Ontario schools being closed the next two weeks. They do normally have a few interesting shows and games on their website. I will probably be trying to use those over the next two weeks in addition to all the other stuff I've found. Hopefully just two weeks.

You may need a library card to sign in online but NovelList K-8+ has some great recommendations for “what to read next”, “for fans of ...”, etc.

And MacGillviray & Freeman is advertising that their films are streaming - mac&free films produces the educational IMAX films seen at museums- “Dolphins” was just released this week. ETA* looks like they’re on prime.

Ds16 logged in to the TVO website today and was able to access the curriculum and content for his Grade 10 business class. He found where they were before school ended and self taught the next unit and made notes as he went. He will basically do the same for all of his current classes. He’s in Business , French , English and History . Additionally we are having him pick a novel and we will take it out from the library online and do a novel study with him .
Life skills is actually occurring right now. He’s learning to make pork fried rice with his dad. He will participate in a variety of home improvement , gardening , cleaning and organizing projects to learn new skills . Tonight he can walk the dogs for some exercise , but he will choose different types of exercise as we fo on.
We are letting him take the lead here as he’s 16 and needs input. My main concern at this point is that he’s French Immersion and we don’t speak french so I can’t provide him with the french conversation he would get in half his classes. However my sister in law is a French Immersion teacher so I plan to have them video chat often to keep that up.

French immersion is one of my worries as well, but I will focus on what I can do and teach him. He uses Duolingo some times which I think helps a bit in learning different words and some reading.

Since Ontario will be extending their time off but haven't said until when yet, it is frustrating to not know how much I should make him do. Two weeks? Three weeks? Sure just get in some extra reading and math practice. Nothing until September? well we'll go full on homeschooling mode and have him up to where he needs to be for grade 6. But then if other parents don't do that what will grade 6 be like? Will all the kids have to learn what they missed?

A new one popped up in my email today! It's not a new course by any means, some of the questions on the discussion boards appear to be 2 years old but it might be a good thing to look at for older students. The lessons include more math based topics and go up to grade 12 trig :crazy2: I know this is something my son would have loved.
484635Pixar in a Box is a behind-the-scenes look at how Pixar artists do their jobs. You will be able to animate bouncing balls, build a swarm of robots, and make virtual fireworks explode. The subjects you learn in school — math, science, computer science, and humanities — are used every day to create amazing movies at Pixar. This collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy is sponsored by Disney.

Looks interesting! DD10 (Grade 5) is doing Imagineering in a Box and loves it. She cannot wait to go back to a Disney park to really enjoy all the details. And now she really wants to visit Disneyland to visit Carsland (my favourite land of all the Disney parks I visited).
