I have some questions about becoming a DVC member:

How far in advance would I have to plan to use my DVC in a location like Italy or Africa, or some other exotic location?

What is minimum amount of points I would need to have a week in an exotic location?

Is it better to buy all DVC points at one home resort or is it better to split points and have 2 different home resorts? For example, 100pts at AKV and 60pts at WLV?

For buying a DVC resale, are there closing costs and if so, who pays the closing costs?

Do the maintenance fee's go up every year, and if so, how much to they go up?

Is DVC right for someone who is looking to alternate using it for Disney World one year and an exotic location another year? I want DVC for Disney World (we go to disney world every other year) and my husband wants it for using in exotic locations.

i'm betting it would need to be at least a year in advance but i don't know much about trading out. in general, trading out is not a good financial deal and it's better to buy DVC to stay at WDW or DLR.

up to you. just remember that you would only be able to use the 100 AKV pts to book AKV at 11 months and not be able to use the VWL pts at AKV until the 7 month window regardless (and that is true the other way around as well).

some people like to use 2 years worth of pts by banking and borrowing at VWL to book VWL at 11 months for christmas one year and then use 2 years worth of their AKV contract to book a stay at AKV (such as concierge rooms which are very difficult for nonowners to book) the next year...and rotate resorts every other year.

at 7 months, you would have the option of combining the points from different resorts to book whatever is still available.

usually, the buyer. if the seller is willing to pay closing costs, they can do so...but if the total cost of the deal gets too cheap, DVC can step in and buy the contract themselves (ROFR)...and you as the buyer would have to start all over looking for a new contract.

not every single year - on rare occasions they have gone down. but yes, generally they increase by 3-4% per year in order to maintain the resorts. here is the history of dues at the different resorts...

i would buy half the DVC pts you need to use it every other year using banking and borrowing at WDW. then just pay cash for the exotic locations.

there are kiosks all through the parks and resorts if you want to talk to disney's DVC "guides." look for the "best kept secret" signs. they will be happy to set up a walkthrough of the current models and explain the system.

you can also read through threads and ask questions here on the DVC forums, which is probably a better idea.
