Free Hotel Upgrades???

I have been reading about people getting upgraded. They get an "email" So, has this happened to anyone? Any tips or tricks?
We are leaving on Sat. Sept. 22, staying at POR....it sure would be nice to have a 1bdrm.!!!!!

I think it mostly happens when the values get overbooked, especially during free dining. They offer to bump some of the people that booked the overbooked values up to usually SSR or OKW.

I got an upgrade like this for my Aug 28-Sep 4 trip. It was an upgrade from ASMu to a 1 BR at OKW. It was a huge dose of pixie dust, but I think it's pretty rare. All the people I heard of who got this upgrade were traveling over Labor Day Weekend. Maybe someone else knows about other upgrades.

Please, don't get your hopes up. You'll only be disappointed. It's not going to happen.

They offered an upgrade to SSR or OKW to a relatively small number of people staying at the values. The people who got this were notified months ago. No one staying at a moderate was upgraded. This kind of thing is extraordinarily rare; it's kind of like the Disney version of winning the lottery.

When you read reports like this on these boards, you have to keep in mind that it kind of artificially magnifies things. Someone posts that they got an upgrade, ten or 15 people respond that they got it, too, and all of a sudden it looks like everyone who booked at a value got upgraded to a DVC resort. That wasn't the case at all. It was probably only a few hundred people, out of thousands who booked values during that time period.

The only kind of upgrades we received in the past were like from standard to water view rooms, etc. It was nice and all, but something not to be expected when check-in time comes for your next trip.

There were 2 times I guess you could say we were upgraded. Back many years ago we booked 3 nights for a regular room and 4 for a preferred at the Port Orleans French Quarter. This was due to the fact that the standard room was not available for our entire stay. They ended up putting us in the preferred room for the entire stay and we only paid the standard rate for the stay. Another was at the Wilderness Lodge where I think we were upgraded. We booked a standard room for 114 per night and had a pool/geyser view with a balcony. It was a wonderful view. They never mentioned any upgrade, but I think it was.

Thanks for all the replies!! Also, what does it mean to get booed? Is it a good or bad thing?

Has anyone just gotten back from the world? wondering what the crowds are like.
