If your entire trip does not fall within the free dining period, do you pay for the days that are blacked out or can you get free dining as long as your first day is in the block?

As long as the day you check in is during free dining, your entire stay will include free dining.

You must check in on a date the promotion is offered. If your check-in date is within the promotion dates, you can get free dining for up to 14 consecutive nights. If you check in outside the promotion period, none of your trip is eligible unless you split it into two reservations, then check out and check back in during the promotion period.
