Free Dining Experiences

There is no such thing as "Free" dining... In the room discount vs. rack rate/free dining, we usually save more going with a room discount (a couple); But depending on your family size and children's ages, and eating habits, you can break even or possibly save a small amount, and enjoy the convenience it provides. I've had good luck making WDW resort reservations through Orbitz. They usually offer whatever discount Disney is offering, PLUS they frequently have 10% off or 15% off codes that they will apply to the total cost in addition to the discount Disney is offering. Makes it even harder to pay rack.

I have used the dining plan once, and it was free dining last November. It was just two adults staying at a mod, so we payed to upgrade from the QS to the standard DP. I ran the numbers multiple times to see whether it would be worth it, and with the restaurants we were already planning to eat at with or without the DP, it made sense for us. We essentially got two more TS and a few more QS meals and snacks for the same price we were planning on spending on just the TS meals we were going to do anyways. It was definitely a lot of fun to have it, but I probably would never purchase it straight out unless it ended up being that kind of a savings again.

We did it one time.

We had the regular dining plan.

My opinion is it’s too much food and you become tied to your ADRs to the point your entire day revolves around when you’re to eat. Not as fun as one would think.

BTW: I priced out “free dining” it’s over $1000 more than what we paid 4 years ago for same party, dates and resort.

I priced out rack rate on my resort of choice for December 2018 and it had skyrocketed in price from December 2016, so Free dining promo, which is based on rack rates would be more money than the rate in 2016. The again, my final cost for RO discount would be higher as well. When I cost out the trip I look at the resort cost in itself, and run numbers based on that rack rate. I base my ROM cost on that, and then move forward with the rest of my trip costs, such as dining and tickets. Every aspect of a WDW has increased in cost so I have no doubt that the overall cost of a FD based trip would be as well.

With that said, a discount is a discount, and something usually beats nothing, so when I booked my FD promo this year, YAY!!! I made the decision to move from the Beach Club, our first choice and where my total cost was a tad over 18,000.00 for two rooms, tix and dining to OKW. Our dates were not included in the promo. The base price of the 2 bedroom villa was 13,219.00 for the 7 of us, which was over 1000.00 less than that rate I was going be paying at BC, so I ignored that amount of my savings. I saved 4227.00. We would have purchased the plan and hoppers anyway, so it is real savings.

I am shocked at the rising cost of lodging in WDW, however if I want to go and I want to stay at a level I prefer, I need to accept that the cost is what it is. I look for discounts, and I will often make adjustments. My dates this trip were written in stone, so my choices were going to be not when I traveled, but how I managed to use a promo if it came available.

As to dining plans, they are really based on preference. We like being tied to ADR's, and we do eat two real meals per day. DH claimed I was starving him when I did not book a hot breakfast daily as well, and thought he would be satisfied with the continental offerings in the BC CL lounge. So far we have never "lost" money on the plan, either purchased or "free", however I know upfront what my family will likely choose at whatever restaurants we book. If they grazed daily I would just skip the plan because it would be too stressful counting the money we did not use. (Both my DD and I are accountants, and I cannot help but loosely track the amounts. DD OTOH will actually keep receipts and after the rip is over she will build he spreadsheet. She will then plop it in my DH lap and show him the cost for the plan, and the cost we would have spent for meals and snack (and this year alcohol and specialty drinks)

I am not an accountant, but I, too, will save receipts and build a spreadsheet when I get home.

Room only discounts at values haven't been great lately (sometimes only 10%), so I think free dining can still be a better option there. I'll be running the numbers when room only discounts come out for our dates, but for now we have a free dining package at Pop in December.

I think you are correct on the Value resorts.
When I ran the numbers on a room discount (the only I have seen offered since I decided to go) for All Star Music, I would only have saved $82 for our 5 night stay. Free Dining was a no-brainer at that point! We will certainly get more than $80 worth of food from it!

We have been tracking savings vs cost for over ten years. The savings are not as profound as they used to be, but they continue to add up, even when we pay for the plan. I am not meticulous any more in tracking but my dd can't help herself!

If staying in a value and having a QS lunch and TS dinner each day there is no discount available that would save us anywhere near what free dining does. The best discount I've ever seen on a value is 25% off. At a cost of $140/night for late November that would save us $315 for a 9 night stay.

$315 doesn't buy much food at Disney for even 2 adults (We're 4 adults). For us free dining will save us considerably.

Free dining isn't the best deal if you're 2 adults staying in a DLX resort with 40% discount or you simply do not eat much.
