I found this yesterday in USA Today and thought I'd pass it on since its FREE.

You can check this link for details (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-01-17-google-ap_x.htm), but basically Google has made free software available that will manage all of your digital photos. I downloaded it yesterday and it really is helpful - I can see all of my thousands of photos in one place. It also has some basic photo editing features to help with color, contrast, red eye, etc.

You can download the actual software here:

http://www.picasa.com/

Hope that didn't sound too much like spam - I'm just very impressed with the software :D

I read the article and the software sounds great. I have pics on my computer that are "lost", so I am hoping the new software can find them.

Thanks! I will share this with DH, and our 2 oldest DDs who all have gone crazy taking pictures with their digital cameras. :)

If you are using windows.. go to start - search or find (depending on your version of windows) .. try searching for *.jpg or *.img make sure it is set to check your entire c:\ drive... if you post back saying what kind of pictures you have (where they taken with a digicam, if so which kind? or where they scanned in?) and what version of windows you have, I can probably give you very precise directions. :)

I loved picasa for the whole couple of days I got to play with it before my computer died (had, absolutely nothing to do with picasa!) Isn't google awesome for giving it away for free? They bought the company, and then turned around and are giving the software away!

Two types are lost -

1. Digital from my camera - I have the Sony Cyber Shot

2. Pics that were email and I saved.

oohh.. we had a sony :) loved it, it was our first digicam, and was so good to us!

If they are not lost = deleted.. just lost = don't what folder they are in... you should be able to search for DSC*.* (unless you always went and renamed your photos from DSC1234.jpg to pictureofgrandma.jpg) ..that should help you find them regardless of whether they are jpg.. but most people use that file format.

If you tell me what operating system you have (windows 98, xp?), I can tell you exactly where to click :) I think on windows 98 if you click on start it tells you in the corner.. it also says it when you turn on your computer.

I was never a big fan of these software managers in the past, but lately my collections have gotten so big that I have begun to love iTunes for managing my music, and Picasa seems really good for my pictures. I'm importing all my CD's of photos, I have well over 1,000 6 Mega Pixel pictures that I'm working on right now.
