I am getting mine and DH's annual credit reports right now, but I am wondering if it is possible to get a free credit score without signing up for one of those monitoring services?

Thanks in advance!

You can use freecreditreport DOT com, you just need to cancel the service within a week so your not charged. That's how we do it and never have a problem.

Go to http://www.credit.com/
and get your free credit score. It's not an actual FICO score but will give you a FICO score range, as well as lots of other valuable information about your credit score by breaking down each category. It will give you a letter grade (A,B,C etc..) for each area and tell you tips on how to improve that area

The link I referenced above is free and has no strings attached and no spam email to follow. It gives you a grade for the following areas:

Payment History (35% of total score)
Debt Usage (30% of total score)
Credit Age (15% of total score)
Account Mix (10% of total score)
Inquiries (10% of total score)

Besides an estimated credit score range for FICO, it also gives you your credit score ranges for VantageScore, PLUS, TransUnion , and CreditXpert.

It tells you how many years of credit history you have (the actual month and year of when you first established credit) , how old your youngest and oldest accounts are, and the average age of all credit accounts. It also tells you how many years of on-time payments you've had, and how many late payments you've had that have gone past 30 days.

It tells you how many revolving accounts you have, how many mortgages, auto loans, and student loans.

It gives you a percentage for your debt-to-limit ratio, your total in credit card debts at the time you run the report, and how many accounts have a balance on them.

It tells you how many inquiries happened within the last year, how many older inquiries there are, and the date of the last inquiry.

Each section also gives you tips for keeping your score high or how to raise it for each area that you're given a grade on.

I think it's a very useful tool and it was interesting to run and see all of the numbers.

THANKS for this!!! I have never heard of it before but this was GREAT!!! THANKS again!!

Another one to try is Creditkarma.com. Again, no sign-up for monitoring and it gives an estimate based on one credit bureau. I'm not sure, but I think it's Trans-union. (I do know that it's the one bureau that my mortgage does not report to for whatever reason, because that is one of the things that the site tells me could improve my score----getting a mortgage. :rotfl: One is enough, thank you! Anyhow, I'm just too lazy to pull out my paperwork right now, but I'm 95% sure they use TransUnion.) I've never has a problem with spam from them, either. Your estimated score updates once a month.

Creditkarma has a new score that they give for free called the Vantage Score. Here's a blurb from their website about it:

VantageScore: The Next Generation of Credit ScoresVantageScore is a new credit scoring model created by America's three major credit reporting agencies to support a truly consistent and accurate approach to credit scoring. This new score provides lenders with nearly identical risk assessment across all three credit reporting companies. Your VantageScore on Credit Karma was calculated based on information in your TransUnion credit report and follows a familiar academic scale for ease of understanding: A (901-990), B (801-900), C (701-800), D (601-700), F (501-600).

I LOVE CreditKarma!

+1 on Credit Karma. Haven't seen any ill effects on my credit from using it (usually check on a monthly basis) and they have some good (and free) analysis of your credit rating.

The lady at the AAA office told us we could get our score for free from AAA. I have not tried it yet but plan to check it out.

Another vote for Credit Karma. I've been using it 2 years and it's pretty accurate. It shows up as a soft pull on my transunion credit report. I love using the credit score estimator, pretty accurate.

www.annualcreditreport.com

This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

The OP was looking for a credit score, not a report. That site is good for monitoring your credit to see if anything fishy is going on but is useless for finding out your score.

That credit.com gave me a C- on account mix because I didn't have a good mixture of loans. No mortgage, no automobile loan, etc., is actually seen as some sort of a problem. That's one score I don't mind getting a low grade on
