Free Credit Report

Does anyone know the name of the place where you can obtain a free credit report once a year? If you've used it, is it legitimate? Do you do it online or by mail? If details on the report are wrong how easy is it to get them changed? TIA!

Go to annualcreditreport.com . This website provides you legitimate links to all three credit bureaus where you can request your free report. You are entitled to a free report every year from each of the Big 3.

As for making changes, it depends on what is in error. Typos and the like are easy fixes. You might need to dispute account mistakes and that normally requireds that the credit bureaus contact the reporting creditors in a dispute process. You can either dispute on line, via automated phone or talk to a credit bureau rep. Keep in mind that the bureaus simply report what the creditors tell them.

One exception, you can rarely have someone else's information on your file. That is a computer error and can either be very easy to correct or very difficult!

I believe that they will all give you a score, as long as you pay their fee.

I have not personally dealt with WF on a past due, but my mom has had luck with other creditors by simply asking nicely in a letter (assuming it is a legitimate item). If it's not legitimate and they are reporting it in error, then dispute it through the credit reporting agency.

Thanks everyone! I am going to get one for myself and one for DH. He and his father (deceased last year) have the same name (jr,sr) and our bank ran a credit report and they are saying some of his father's info. is on his report. Some of these are very large balances due to the fact that is sister is an authorized user on several of his accounts (in fact the only one that has ever used the cards). I believe this is going to be a big, fat mess. I guess this is where I'll begin. I would never in a million years name a child after anyone else!

My husband is a 3rd. I got his report and some of his dad's accts were on it. It was not difficult to have them removed. I think it tod less than a month for the responses. They should run by social security number, not name.

The same website or the big 3 websites will provide you information on disputing the information reported on your reports.

Not every creditor reports a social security number and they are not required to. Crazy I know.

get your scores from FICO as the others that the credit reporting agencies use is not what lenders use. Go to myfico.com

You can't get a fico score based on Experian data nowadays. Lenders can but the public can't. Their agreement fell apart for some reason.
