Just got an email from AOL, saying that its going to be free!!!

I know a lot of people dont like AOL, but I do. I have high speed connection, so I dont pay that much for AOL, but it would be great if it was free.

Has anyone else heard of this?

AOL will not be free, only some of their services, such as E-mails, etc.

False!! If you have a way to connect (broadband, cable, etc.) call them up and tell them you want the free plan. I got it yesterday. There is an entire thread devoted to it on the budget board as well.

Saw a TV news story.... ALL to be FREE... as they let go of 5,000 workers.

Has anyone heard anymore about them offering a reduced rate dial up plan?

I currently use their dial up (good speed and reliable compared to the others I have tried) but I don't use it that much at home. I do much of my Internet stuff at work. I hate paying $25 a month, and would prefer to pay a little less.

Dial up is going down to 9.99

Basically AOL is changing the way they do business entirely and fairly soon AOL will be no different than any other web provider
The service will be free if you have your own broadband but if you want tech support that is 9.99 a month also

Personally I am not upset to see it go

I got my free AOL two days ago. I have never used tech support and that is all I am giving up. Yippee!! You do have to call however, don't assume it will "just happen". Also, AOL is famous for continued billing so be sure to check your credit card to be sure that the billing has stopped.

Check out the AOL post on the Budget board- many of us read it and called AOL last week or the week before to get it free. Definitely worth your while, and it's free!!!

Yep, heard of it. Scratched my head at first and then rejoiced! We can get high speed through AOL here in the boondocks but we can get it through our local tele company. We've debated because unlike many people, we like our AOL. Plus the headache of switching all of our emails and such...yikes!

So this is going to be a GREAT deal for us!

I just DL'd it an hour ago. When it cost money it wasn't worth it to me. Now that it is free, I am happy to have it. Took 20 minutes to set up. And the security center found 6 spyware programs that my other 2 spyware programs did not.

I am doing a full scan of my computer as I type.

If it's for free, it's for me!

If you currently are paying for AOL and want to change. Try going to Keyword-Change Plan. It should give an option to change there for free or the $9.95 plan.

Yup, I had reposted the Budget Board link here on the Community Board last week so everyone could see it.

I switched to free last week. Absolutely no change in what I use or how I connect.

Will this include the child protection type things? DD#1 is on the teen AOL and the other two kids are on kids AOL and believe me, nothing gets through there. It's the main reason I still have AOL.

It seems like 100% AOL.... no difference from what it was when they charged.

Boy that was an easy way to save 14.95 per month!

Just FYI, here's what the confirmation screen says about what's included in the free plan:

AOL Free Service
This plan gives you unlimited usage of AOL over a high-speed connection (purchased separately from your local cable or telephone company) or a dial-up connection (purchased separately from another company).

This plan includes:
Basic Safety Features - including anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, parental controls, spam fighting, and anti-phishing. Downloads available at AOL Keyword: Safety. Anti-phishing requires use of AOL Explorer or AOL software.
7 AOL Screen Names
Automated customer support - Note: this plan does not include phone, email or chat customer support.
Video-on-demand and 20 XM radio stations
FREE AIM Phoneline - including unlimited inbound calls

Notes:
- High-speed connection is not included
- Dial-up connection is not included
- Premium services are subject to charges

Please note:
- This price plan will go into effect within 48 hours. You will still be under your current plan until this change becomes effective.
- Although you will no longer be charged any monthly membership fee, you will be responsible for any other charges you might have incurred since your last billing date as well as any outstanding balance on your account and any premium services to which you have separately subscribed.
- An additional $5 charge will still apply if premium services or additional fees are paid through your checking account or telephone bill.

I also just switched online...my billing date is tomorrow :scared: so not sure if I cut it too close to the wire or it will kick in before they bill...my luck it won't...... :guilty:
