Talk to me about the 50 MB Internet data...
-How do I claim it?
-Per person or stateroom?
-**What apps do I turn off in the background that may hog this data?
-How do I turn the apps off?
-What else do I need to know?
TIA
At night, I turned on airplane mode, but I don't think this was really necessary. I did not check Facebook or email; essentially all I did was text message (with instructions to those I was texting to NOT send pictures).
Airplane mode when the iphone is plugged into power is a good idea. If an ios update becomes available while you are on the cruise, the phone takes wifi+power as an indication it can download the ios update even if you have not requested it. There is no way to turn off this feature. The chances of this happening are slim, but I had it happen to me and burned through 500MB data overnight even though I had all the normal settings turned off.
That is correct. You can use the App without having to sign up for any Internet Plan.So the navigator app messaging doesn't count toward wifi?

Correct. You can stay connected to wifi, log out of the internet and still use the navigator app.
Oh, yes, I forgot about those pesky iOS updates! Lucky for me, there were none during our cruise! Wouldn't logging out of your WiFi account accomplish the same thing, though? I did sometimes log-out for extended periods (including overnight), depending on whether or not I was expecting to receive a text. If you stay logged in all of the time, though, this could cause a big problem.
I do have a question, though...does anyone know if looking at your usage on the Connect at Sea mobile website use up data? During our entire cruise, I tried to figure out if checking my status used any of the 50 MB, but I couldn't tell for sure one way or the other.
