New issue...My DD8 woke up and her elbow is a little swollen. She said it hurt a little yesterday but does not remember hurting it. She is a competitive swimmer and swims 4-5 times a week, so I am guessing it is from that??
I just am worried b/c I dont think it is normal for kids to swell unless there is a big problem.
Called the doc, they said ice, heat, motrin.

Ok, so I am hoping you all say I am a wacko and not to worry!! So, please do!

We are in our 12th season of swimming  In fact, DS had a meet yesterday, and we just got back from the Special Olympics state meet (DD made the National team in fly!)

Sounds pretty common for swimmers. She could have hit it on the wall during a turn, hit the water the wrong way off the blocks, many different things that she might not have noticed. It sounds you have been given excellent advice on how to treat it.

Also, I would ask your coach to observe her technique and see if anything has changed. Kids, who had perfect form one week, have been known to add strange tweaks to their form the next week :goodvibes

It sounds very much like elbow epicondylitis, which is commonly called "tennis elbow" but can be from swimming also. Basically, it's an overuse injury.

Ice, heat, and ibuprofen is the way to go :thumbsup2

My DD is on swim and water polo at the same time 6 days a week, she is complaining her arms and legs are swollen. Well no wonder with that much working out. I would just follow dr's advice, it doesn't soundserious to me at all.

Thank you guys!! Rachael played outside for a while tonight and it didnt bother her at all. Still a bit swollen though.
By now, you know how I am, I automatically think the worst!

Although I don't have a child in swiming, he is in dance and overuse injuries do happen as the others have said.

I would suggest taking her to a doc who specializes in sports, if you are that worried about the complaint. Sometimes it takes spending a wad of dough and getting a "that's normal" response before we stop worrying needlessly.
