Freaking out a bit...

The DOT is doing some sort of work on the drainage ditches on my road. I live out in the country. My closest neighbor is the farm "next door" (about a 1/4 mile away). I hear my dogs having a fit this morning which means there is somebody on the property or in the road in front of my house...there is...it's the guys working on the road.

Inmates.

Ok fine. They drop off the inmate and a road cone with a "SLOW" sign and have him sit right at the foot of my driveway. I suppose his job is to warn traffic of the road work (hahaha..traffic. My road is RURAL).

I have no problem with the work programs for the inmates. My freak out is because the REST of the crew is positioned down the road, working on my neighbors drainage ditch a 1/4 mile away! Nobody is supervising the inmate sitting 3o feet from my door.

So I have all the doors locked and the dogs are with me. I looked out the window a little while ago, and the inmate is gone but the sign and cone are still there.

FREAKING OUT.

I know this isn't funny but I am giggling. The guy probably had to pee!:rotfl2: If he is the flag guy chances are he is a MINOR non-violent criminal. (and if he's off peeing maybe it was for public urination:rotfl2:)

I'd be scared too. I mean, the department of corrections and the DOH routinely let out the most violent criminals to be flaggers for road work.

Well, he's back. Wasn't paying attention to the time, but my guess is that it was likely his lunch break.

I DID have to go out and put mail in the mail box. Since I had to walk right past him, I nodded and said "Afternoon!"

Unfortunately he wasn't fast enough (or smart enough) to turn down the volume on his two-way radio. His buddy on the other end (they had moved a bit closer to my house) shouts to him through the radio:

"Awww there she is...DAaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!" I've never seen anyone move so quickly as he tried to both turn down the volume AND shove the radio into his pocket.

I'd be flattered? but somehow I'm imagining that prisoners aren't terribly picky about women. And to those who think I'm being silly worrying about the "violent work-program inmates"....when you are a woman, alone, in a house in the country, you DO worry about these things...every day.

Not to scare the Op or anything, but a long time ago an inmate worker (nonviolent) escaped and killed someone so it could happen.

Op most likely it is nothing, but you are doing the right thing by locking doors and keeping an eye on him.

I think that I would have mailed my things another day! :rotfl2:

Thought about it, but it had to go out today.

I think maybe I'll pull out my hoochie skirt and heels to wear for the rest of the day while working around the farm. Might as well entertain everyone while I work....especially since I have to mow the lawn.

Now THERE's an image for you!

Ugh...totally hiding in the house till 5pm...

Don't you have something important to do in town? Like go get ice cream and catch a movie?

Are you friendly with the police in your area or a sheriff? Invite him/her or their spouse over for tea.

Yes to the first part...already did the errands.

No, to the second part. Luckily, DH is coming home early today because he has a doctor's appointment.

Honestly, you think he is going to come and attack you?

Have you seen the economy lately? He is better off with his 3 squares a day and a roof over his head in prison!

Honestly, I think I am ALWAYS a target. Again...alone in the middle of nowhere.

The main thing that bothered me about the whole thing was the lack of supervision over these guys. not that I expect Cool Hand Luke style deputy-on-a-horse-with-shotgun standing over him all day, but he was out of eye sight for a GOOD deal of the day.

BTW, if he did attack me he would STILL get a roof over his head and three squares a day.

Luckily they're all gone for the day. Now I can go back to my regular worrying. According to my employee who showed up a while ago, there are a couple of bank robbers holed up in the woods somewhere near her home a feew miles away. Police helicopters have been out looking for them. They caught one of them.

Jennasis, I would have felt the exact same way you did

I think you should move. Or don't move and get LOTS of giant dogs.

In any event I am glad they called it a day.

I would have probably taken him out a Coke and some cookies or chips or something.

Unlike MOST prisoners, this is probably one who did something non-violent and not "major" as far as crimes are concerned, and has CLEARLY made progress of some sort since he is allowed to be OUTSIDE, ALONE and working. I doubt he's going to do anything to you or your property.
