Freak dancing

I think it is just what is popular today. I graduated HS in 1992 and we were dancing like that back then. It is a bit much these days but I don't know dances should be banned. The music is also much more risque as well. Ask me again in 14 years when DS is 15 and I may change my tune though!

1987 is when Dirty Dancing came out, maybe that is when it started to be more mainstream?

I graduated in 1990 and we did not dance like that. Maybe I ran with a different (punk/alt/ska) crowd, but none of the girls at any of our dances or mixers danced like that. I think it's gross and very degrading. I can't imagine looking back at highschool dance photos and seeing myself pretending to have s*x with my boyfriend on the dance floor. Ick. We didn't even dance that close during the slow dances, lol. AND I MARRIED THE GUY FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! :rotfl:

I graduated from high school in 1991 and this was certainly going on then, too - and I went to a VERY small rural highschool in the heartland of America. We even used the same term for it - "freak dancing" or "freaking". :confused3 Neither the style of dance or the name for it is new, so I'm not sure how it would be a "sign of the times" or anything.

I agree. I think it's degrading.

I'm older than all of you, I graduated from high school in 1984. :teeth: :teeth: That kind of dance wasn't popular back then. :teeth: I said that I learned something new tonight because that's the first time I've heard of it. I've heard of grinding, but not "freak" or "freaking". I didn't know it was so rampant in school dances. :confused3

"Freaking" has been around for a while. I was in Jr. High when the kids were "freaking" at house parties. That was back in the early 90's. Nothing new at all.

I agree that it isn't BRAND new, but I can tell you where I went to school, this would NEVER have been allowed. And I went to a very progressive high school in a large midwest city.
I guess the difference is that we had some pride in ourselves as young LADIES (and this wasn't back in the dark ages, lol) and I would not have been caught dead dancing like this. I am sorry, but go get yourself a pole and you've got a job, girls. If I ever have a daughter and she ever considers this as dancing, I will consider myself a failure. I am FAR from a prude but I really think this borders on child porn! It is completely inappropriate at children's school events. JMHO!!!

What's really sad is that at my first boy-girl party in sixth grade, other sixth graders taught me to dance like that. By the time I made it to high school, we'd calmed down. We were a classy bunch back then.

Personally, I think making it such a big deal is encouraging teenagers to dance like this just to prove a point. Yeah, it'd be great if they realized how ridiculous it is and found other ways to dance, but turning chaperones into dance police probably won't do any good.

Yes, its been happening for years. When I was in 9th grade back in 1992 it was happening then (and that was the first real dance I ever went to...kinda shocking to me)

Well, we had the "meat-monster" dance in the early 80's, but those of us who were able to use some form of self-restraint knew better than to act that way.

My teen seems to have a problem with using better judgment, and so I have to check her before she leaves for school to make sure her underwear aren't hanging out of her pants, her skirts are long enough that she won't get detention, and her makeup is understated.

I wish all parents would do that with their kids!

Tracy, I agree. I had to LOL at the comment in bold. :teeth:

I doubt that any decent parent would be proud to see his/her daughter "dancing" like that. Then again, I could be wrong... I can hear it now, "Look at our little Suzie, she sure can thrust them hips. Dang, we did good!" :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: ;) Can you say, "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!!!"

I hate to see young girls and women allowing themselves to be degraded in such a way. :sad2: :sad2:

You are right. I guess that's the reason behind cancelling the dances.
