Civil Service just let everyone in this morning to Cocoa Beach and so my sister, who had flown down there the day of evacuations to remove their personal items like photo albums prior to evacuation, and her husband were just able to get in to survey the damage. It is horrific - all windows have been blown out, even with hurricane shutters, and everything is either down in the parking lot or pool and has been sandblasted and soaked and thrown through walls. Our condo is on the top floor of the complex facing directly out into the ocean. They think some of the electronics they tarped down into the inner closets may be OK, but the condo has been rendered completely unlivable so they now have to go and find shelter yet again.

I am very glad to have chosen last week to vacation up in Maine instead of everything else we were thinking of doing - all of which involved Florida and the condo.

It is a numb feeling sitting thousands of miles away and realizing that your vacation home is gone - for my sister who is down there experiencing it - it is devestating since she was using it as her primary residence and had just sunk a lot of money in it to make it her home now.

I have been away for a week so I don't know who else has checked in from down there, but I hope everyone is OK - and I truly hope no one else has experienced devestation like this. Its not my primary home, so I truly truly feel deeply for all who lost their primary homes in this storm.

So sorry to hear about the condo. But at least she and her husband are safe.

I'm so sorry for you and for your sister :( .

True, very, very true and exactly what I told them through their tears.

I am SO very sorry to hear this.. :( My heart really aches for you and all of the others who lost so much..

I didn't realize that Cocoa Beach suffered so much damage.. My son-in-law's aunt has a condo 2 blocks from the ocean.. Now I'm wondering if their place is gone too.. :(

I don't know what else to say.. How do you comfort someone who has lost everything? :(

I was obsessively watching it from vacation, and what happened to Cocoa Beach was that the strongest bands were coming right over the Cape and Cocoa Beach and bringing with them at least three confirmed tornados. NASA suffered huge losses too and are claiming it will now set back the shuttle missions even further. Cocoa Beach had confirmed wind gusts of 125 miles per hour. You didn't hear much about it on the news because everyone was barred from the barrier islands and waterways and the bridges over were too unsafe until this morning. So no news reporters to be able to view the devestation right when it was happening like in West Palm and the like.

Everyone is just finding out what happened to their places this morning.

Thanks Ed! Its really weird sitting here when they are down there just overwhelmed by the devestation. Plus, what do they do now? I would not be able to pull myself together to know where to begin while waiting for the adjusters.

I am glad you and your family our OK. I hope that you can rebuild without any loss and get back to Normal as soon as posible.

I'm so sorry.

I am anxiously waiting to hear from my best friend who has a home in Cocoa Beach. She and her husband boarded up/wrapped up and headed to Rockledge where her dad lives. I am waiting to hear from a friend in Titusville also.

 So sorry for you and your sister's loss.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I spent 2 nights in Cocoa Beach in June and thought it was beautiful. I hope everyone can rebuild.
