I fractured my left foot on Father's Day. We will be in WDW for 11 days in mid-August. Orthopedist says that this should heal in 6 weeks which is a little bit less than a week before our trip. I'm wondering if I'll be able to do all that walking. I've thankfully never broken a bone before, so I don't know what to expect. Should I plan and mentally prepare for using an ECV or will I be fine? Please share your experience with a fractured foot...thanks :goodvibes

I have not fractured anything, but I am a nurse and have seen people whose casts came off. We’ve also had a foreign exchange student who had a stress fracture of her ankle during her stay with us.

Muscles that have been immobilized with a cast or brace will still be weak at 6 weeks, even if totally healed. After weeks of not using the muscles, they loose some strength and you probably won’t be able to walk long distances.
When you consider that the average guest walks between 6 and 9 miles a day, I would suggest renting an ECV or wheelchair.

THere is more information about renting in post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread. You can find that thread near the top of this board or follow the link in my signature to get there.

I would not even count on being able to walk 1/2 of a park 1 week after getting a cast off. I have broken my foot, and it was weeks after before I was able to walk for very long. I would count on getting a wheelchair or ECV for the parks and around the resort.

I'm gonna have to say, sorry, not going to happen....by walking. Get a chair, use crutches for part....anything else so u don't miss out on ur trip!!!!

I hurt my ankle a couple of years ago and I was 8 months getting it back to normal after my cast came off at the 8 week mark. It's a little out of the norm....my coworker broke his in Jan (New Years to be exact...what a holiday) and he is JUST getting back to work.....modified work...that's 6 months.

So being able to walk a park alllllll day, will probably not happen. I still have issues with lots of walking with swelling and some pain if its THAT much walking. But certainly go and have fun. Get a chair, ECV.

And, I hope ur foot is feeling better and heals quickly:):)

My dad on our last trip was recovering from a broken ankle, plate and 6 screws when we went to disney. The first day he was alright but sore, day two really bad limp and pain, day three met up with us around lunch at the park in a wheel chair. Spent next week in the wheel chair. The bus was a pain on and off getting back and forth to the theme parks but the resorts and theme parks were great with the wheel chair. Very helpful and kind. I Would suggest packing ice packs to keep in the hotel room fridge or bring large ziploc bags to put ice from the machines in to help with inflamation that will occur from the injury. Also make sure to bring anti-inflamatories with you. Also if you can manage the pool take advantage to releave swelling and pain.

Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and reserved an ECV. 11 days is a long time, and I need to keep up with my teens ;)

Great idea!! I'll be sure to pack the refillable ice bags they gave me at the hospital. Thanks :goodvibes

My sister broke her tibia and fibula (lower leg bones) near her ankle on Jan. 5, twisting her leg on an icy sidewalk. She has had the hard cast removed, but she's still in an air cast. It is still not healed well enough to be removed, and she has this electric impulse machine she uses on it for therapy. She has lost her job as a pediatric RN in a hospital, tho she was told she can apply for a new job. Her foot faces to the outside now, from the spiral nature of the leg break, and that will also require therapy, if it can be fixed at all. We are all just flabbergasted at how complicated this situation is. We all thought 6-8 weeks and done. :sad2:
