My poor DH just got home from the emergency room, he fractured his arm in two places. Tomorrow he goes for a cast, any ideas how long he'll have to be in it?

Thanks. :sad2:

Thanks. Poor guy, I feel so badly for him. Thankfully it was his left arm and he's right handed. He's so upset and I don't know what to do. :sad2:

We're due to go away in 9 weeks.

Ask for a waterproof cast, some insurance won't cover it. For DS it was like $40 so worth it.

I can't agree STRONGLY ENOUGH with this. DS broke his wrist a few years ago, the waterproof cast was $25 out of pocket, and in hindsight, I would have paid $100 or more. There was no fuss with showers, he could swim, and it was pretty light too.

GET THE WATERPROOF CAST if the type of break allows for it.

OH, DS had a minor break, and was in his cast for 4 weeks.

Do request a waterproof cast!! DD had one on her foot during our trip to WDW this past summer..............she did not miss a beat!!! I had to pay 35 for it!! So worth it!!

Not many orthopedics have the material so you might want to have DH ask before he goes for the cast. He may have to have the cast replaced a few times during the healing process as they do stretch out and get loose.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!

He's in a lot of pain. :sad1: He fractured it just above his wrist and just below where the arm bends at the elbow. YIKES! He said the xrays were so uncomfortable that he had tears streaming down his face. :sad1:

You know, I had surgery on my wrist a couple of years ago and had a cast on for 6 weeks. I do not remember at all what I did as far as showers! I mean, I obviously took them and it wasn't a water proof cast. :scratchin I just can't remember. Maybe I blocked it all out. Hmmm...it went all the way up past my elbow too.

Hopefully we'll get that cast on tomorrow, the sooner it gets on, the sooner it comes off. :thumbsup2

Does DH smoke? If so, he needs to stop now - it really inhibits the healing process. Sometimes smokers take twice as long to heal.

I broke my write and wore an external fixation device. I healed quickly and was out of it in 7 weeks.

If I had a cast, I sure would have wanted it to be waterproof!!!

I broke my arm last year and was in a cast for six weeks. Luckily for me, it was a clean fracture so it didn't take any longer. Depending on how 'clean' it was it may be shorter or longer.
Tell him I feel for him! :) Btw, Lortabs 10.0 and Darvocet are great for the pain! lol

Nope, he's not a smoker.

He's heading in tomorrow morning to get a cast put on. He's still in quite a bit of pain but doing a bit better.

I think he'll be fine in 9 weeks - that should be plenty of time to heal :thumbsup2

How did he brake it? I would say that he's probably going to be in there for 6 weeks. Hope he's feeling better soon!

if he just left the ER, here is a tip..

ASK the freaking doctor that discharged him..

Man get a clue

Here's the deal.

The doctors will tell you "between 6 weeks and 3 months." The OP was asking a question based on other's experience. My experience is that it doesn't take as long to heal, if you are otherwise healthy and take care of yourself, as the "worst case scenario."

So there's no need for our OP to "get a clue."

Shelby - I hope the casting went well today and that you had a good prediction on length of time in the cast!

My daughter broker her wrist and was in a cast for 6 weeks. I broke a small bone in my foot, I was in a cast for 6 weeks also.

Hope he is able to have a restful night.
