Our FP+ Day is coming up on 5/1. Our APs are good through 7/2 (trip is June 30 through I think July 8). Will we need to renew our APs before 5/1 in order to make all our FP+??

Yes - you will have to renew before you can book the days after your fp expires.

We ran into this last year as our AP's expired exactly on our T60 - we had to quickly renew and then book but it worked out fine :)

edited for clarity

You’ll be able to book FPs for the first 3 days of your trip but will need to renew to book for all park days.

You can purchase tickets to book FPs for your park days and then use the tickets towards your renewal when you reach WDW.

Would we need to get 9 day tickets, or could we get 6 day tickets (since our APs would cover us through July 2)?

6 days - buy the minimum and the value is applied to your renewal. You can purchase from a discount ticket seller: BW Ticketing, UT, etc.

When an AP expiration date falls within an upcoming trip window, if you contact WDW ticketing, they can allow
you to renew earlier than the customary 60-days-in-advance to accommodate your trip's FP needs.

This was not our experience last August - I even had a personal contact with someone in GR due to some issues on a prior trip and they could not do this for us. Unless something has changed since then I wouldn't count on it - but it never hurts to call :)

Club Level guests using the Extra program also have not been allowed to renew APs early. They specifically talked to AP CMs and their request was denied.

I'm only passing on what has been reported by other guests in this situation.
Disney created this bizarre unintended consequence in their haste to build FP+ rules.

Some guests have been able to get Disney to take care of the problem ("guest recovery.")

Could be that some guests exhibit "stronger objections" than others (or certainly more accommodating CMs.)

Or CMs may not be too helpful for guests wanting to book FPs at 90 days; but the guests are paying for the onsite accommodations and the Extra upcharge. At least the concerns of the AP holders are being noted.

Not compensating for a non-conforming AP anniversary date is counterproductive to the whole idea
of AP renewals.
NOT making an adjustment for their ill-designed system is a slap in the face of loyal guests.

I honestly think in my case someone would have done it if it was possible. I had just had some serious issues during a trip and my MDE account was starting its downhill trek (unknown to me at the time). Among other issues I couldn't add my daughter to my resort reservation, nor could IT and I was on the phone with someone at GR or IT for literally hours trying to book the trip before we realized the AP renewal issue.

I was a "click away" from canceling the trip and not renewing but the best they could do was help me at 6am on T60 to get the AP's renewed.

eta- if this is possible then I agree someone paying for CL 90 day extras should be able to renew early.

Disney Guest Relations can do anything they want to do (or find a way to work around the situation) regarding "guest recovery."
They have "rules" but they also have ways of compensating if they have the desire
and imagination (I use that word advisedly) to help their guests.
One way is to "set up a file" in a guest's account (a known practice with Guest Relations, which they have done for many years)
that contains a set of intentions and instructions
to future CMs to follow when looking to help a guest with unusual circumstances...
especially concerning APs and renewals...
some of the situations that can be particularly problematic for guests (LOYAL guests.)
