Found something that looks like a large diamond...

I'm sure it's just glass or crystal or something, but how would I really know? It is the size of 2-3 carats (karats, sp??). It feels a little heavier than plastic, so I don't think that is what it is. It's got the same kind of cut as my engagement diamond (but much bigger). I would be really embarrassed if I took it to a jeweler and they said it was costume jewelry, so I don't want to do that.
Is there a way to find out what it is?

If it's a diamond, it will cut/scratch glass. That's always one easy way to check, so find an old mirror and scratch away. That would be cool if it was real!

I don't know... my dh said that was a "wive's tale." I don't think I have an old mirror anyway...

Glass/cubic zirconia will also cut/scratch glass.

I think any reputable jeweler would NOT think it was "goofy" to check the stone for you. I don't think it would be a big deal to do that. That's what I would recommend.

If it's "nothing," it wouldn't hurt anything. If it's "something," you'd be glad to know the truth.

If you do take it to a jeweler, make sure you don't leave it there. What if it is a real diamond? I wouldn't leave it anywhere with anyone else until I knew for sure!

A reputable jeweler will do a diamond test on the spot; you shouldn't have to leave it. If they ask you to, don't. Find another jeweler who will do it without having to leave it.

It's worth a shot....you don't have anything to lose.

I would definitely take it to a jeweler to find out for sure. About 2 years ago, I lost the diamond solitaire out of my engagement ring. I had just noticed that morning that one of the prongs was bent and I made a mental note to have it repaired, but never in a million years did I think the stone could come out (it's a six prong setting)! Well, when I noticed it was gone my heart stopped. I had been all over town that day, and it could have been anywhere. But a happy ending for me: After about three hours of trying to retrace my steps, I found the diamond wedged at the back of my cabinet behind the shelf. Someone was definitely looking over me! Sorry to go on, but it could quite possibly be real, so I would check it out. Good luck!

I just had a dream last night about finding a diamond by itself. I would check it out, often diamonds are lost out of their settings. Where did you find it?

It is true that a diamond will scratch glass, but it's also true that other things will as well so it's not a flawless test. There are other scratch tests you can do with the diamond that will rule out glass or CZ, but I doubt you have corundum (commonly called ruby or sapphire in its jewelry-quality settings) lying around in a way you could scratch it. ;)

Best bet is to take it to a jeweler and have them check it out. There are other methods you could use, but they all require the kind of equipment the jeweler will have but you won't unless you're into gemology yourself (like microscopes and stuff).

Let us know what you find out!

Can a diamond have ANY scratches on it? I see a few small, faint scratches on the top and I wasn't sure if that could happen to a diamond.

Yes, though if it has a lot of them, then it's probably not diamond. There's not much out there that will scratch diamonds, but there are ways diamond can be scratched. If they're very, very fine scratches, I'd still take it in to find out what it is (though most likely it'll be something else). If they're deep and a lot of them, I'd put money on it being something besides diamond.

But now you gotta take it in to be checked out 'cause we all want to know for sure what it is! :D
