Found old safe in my basement

 but you had fun:thumbsup2 & so did a lot of us............:rolleyes1

OK, so nothing worth ANYTHING in the safe, but You ruined a antique safe to find this out.:confused3 So, here is a site to find out WHAT the safe is worth, if you hadn't damaged it....www.theantiquesafecollector.com

Wow, talk about Monday morning quarterbacking.

First of all, it doesn't seem like there was a good way to get into the safe to find out what was in it. Who is going to sell an "Intact" safe, that they can't get in to find out what's in it? She could have sold it filled with gold bullion.

As to worth, I'll bet that person on the genealogy page would love a copy of that one piece of paper, as well as any survivors of the Clement & Scott or Clyde Knapp since the paper was written to Knapp by Clement & Scott. Those people would be the descendants to track down - but not for money, but as family history.

DISNEYLOVER70 thanks for giving us a bit of excitement here on the CB. It's the most fun I've had here in a long time. Sorry you didn't get rich, but you sure made a lot of disers pay attention!

It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for sharing. Sorry there wasn't more, but that letter is still an interesting piece of history and may be worth something to someone.

I guess that is the end of our Safe Watch 2008. I am so glad that all of you were here to share in this. I am sorry that the ending is so disappointing. But at least there was the one letter, gives me something to research into.

Boy do I have a mess to clean up................ Heavy concrete, metal and not to mention the smell to get out of my house.

The safe may have been empty, but look at it this way, at least there was an ending and it wasn't another "neighbor" thread!

Thanks again for making this even more exciting for me!!!!!

And to all who are angry with me for ruining a piece of history "I am sorry" but I just couldn't help myself. Forgive me:worship:

Ok, I am back............. Whew. Longest ride of my life. I am so tired. Ok, no one cares about me, so here we go with the safe stuff.

Is this too cool or what??!!!

I did a few searches on Ancestry.com.

So far, nothing conclusive on any of the names, except Orin S Bacon.

According to the 1880 Census, Orin S Bacon (born 1837) was living in Canandaigua, Ontario, New York, the same city listed on the document. His wifes name was Harriet E., and he had 5 children living with him at the time (Leillie M - 22, Orin S. - 20, Albert S. - 17, Eliza S. - 12, and Jennie O. - 8). His listed occupation is sheriff.

So Orin (1837) would have been 62 in 1899, and his son, Orin (1860) would have been 39. Not sure which is the one, but definitely one of them.

There is another, Orin S Bacon Jr, born 1890, living in Canandaigua in 1910. Probably not him. Too young in 1899.

And an Orin S Bacon III, born 1908, living in Canandaigua in 1910. This person died in 1992 in Pinelles, Florida.

I did not find any active trees with Orin S Bacon, so noone living to contact.

As you can see the safe is empty..........:sad1:

Awww. :sad1: That one folded sheet of paper looked like it was accidentally lodged behind the drawers & no one knew it was there to empty it out. Still, a great historical find.

Lots better than when Geraldo opened Capone's safe & found nothing at all! :lmao:

Thank you for giving us a sense of closure.....at least we can all sleep tonight. Sorry you didn't win big, but it's been a great ride :thumbsup2

Just wanted to add, I would've done the same thing. Oh, and thank your husband for us. ;)

Thanks for sharing this journey with all of us. I know for one, I would of done the same exact thing you did...to get inside of it and see what was there, or wasnt there. I think the majority of us would of done the same thing as you did. I know my husband would of been down there with every powertool he owned to get it opened.;)

Once again thank you for sharing this interesting journey with us...:)

Thanks for a great weekend of excitement!

I would have done the same thing too :thumbsup2

According to this genweb post...

A James McKechnie died on September 20th, 1889
(DIED - In Canandaigua, Sept. 13, James McKechnie, in the 74th year of his age.)

According to this Canandaigua history website
http://www.townofcanandaigua.org/history.htm

The Steamboat Era on Canandaigua Lake

The steamboat era in New York State started in 1807 when Robert Fulton ran his steam-powered "Clairmont" on the Hudson River. The first steamboat in the Finger Lakes region was the "Enterprise" which was launched in 1825. Canandaigua Lake's steamboat era ran from 1827 with the launching of the "Lady of the Lake" and ended in 1935 when the "Idler" discontinued passenger service. There were fourteen major boats that provided commercial service on Canandaigua Lake.
...
Canandaigua launched in 1865. Built by Bejamin Springstead for the Warner Brothers of Canandaigua. It was 110' long and 18' wide. For years it was owned by J. & A. McKechnie, well know brewers in Canandaigua. The "Canandaigua" was powered by soft coal, had a side-wheel and operated on the lake for 24 years, captained by Marshall W. Cooper. It was dismantled in 1889 and its engine was used in the new "Ogarita."

Further news about the McKechnies...

I'll look around some more, but it looks like this safe might contain some papers from a person important to local history.

Great find!!

OP, sorry you didn't find anything but at least you had a great time with this thread and opening the safe! I would have done the same thing you did. I wouldn't have been able to sell it without knowing if there was anything inside or not!

Classic thread for sure.
thanks!
and special thanks to your hubby. that was a bit of work, I'm sure.
