Found a way to make a little extra money for Disney!

OK, so do you pay taxes on this? Is it something you receive W-2's for tax filing?

I ask because my DH will be layed off from his full time job in January and was just told that his part-time job will decrease his unemployment benefit by more than he is actually making working the part time job! Crazy, but true. I just would not want this to impact us, rather than benefit us...

Your responsible to pay taxes on all income. Thats why they want your ss number. You will be considered to be an independent contractor and you will have to make sure that you put the money aside to pay all taxes yourself.

YOU should be the one to sign up for the mystery shop then....because YOUR income doesn't affect his unemployment benefits. For UE benefits they will look at all of HIS sources of income before determining his benefit amount. They'll determine his weekly payout based on his average salary for the job he's losing.....around here the max you can get $265....then they will substract anything he earns during that week....so basically if you earn $265 in a week you're "unemployed", then you get zero from unemployment. If you earned $200 you'd get $65. Of course, if your salary from the lost job wasn't as high as their max your payout could be less than the $265, or if states differ in their weekly payout, so use this as an example.

But the upshot is YOUR income even if it's thousands of dollars a month don't count against his unemployment. Only his.

I wouldn't worry about that. Odds are your yearly income for mystery shopping will be in the hundreds of dollars, not exactly a big hit on your tax bracket.

You are an independent contractor. If you make over $600 they will send you (and the IRS) a Form 1099 Misc Income and yes, you pay taxes on it.

I just submitted my info....we'll have to see. I didn't see it anywhere...but I'm assuming it is okay if kids come with as you are a mystery shopper?

I used to mystery shop quite a bit. There was a long stretch of time where I didn't have to pay for an oil change for either of our cars because I was able to shop Jiffy Lube. I also once got a massage, dinner at the Melting Pot, and more. I ultimately stopped because there just was not time for it anymore, but I'm considering signing up again.

It depends on the shop, but most of the time, no. When assigned a job, you are given very specific things to look for, many times are required to ask specific questions or required to spend a certain amount of time in one place. You are required to make a lot of observations, discreetly time transactions, etc. and you can't get distracted by children. I can think of so many shops I did that children absolutely could not go on.

Taxes and unemployment benefits, along with social security benefits are all affected when you are making ANY additional income.

While a few hundred dollars will not affect most, it can affect your SS benefits, possibly bumping you out of additional benefits. Same with UE and even bumping some people into a different tax bracket. Unfortunately this is where you have do research and see if making this money is worth it at the bottom line.

Sadly, working hard and making a small amount can greatly affect future benefits.
That is the thing with our tax systems that drives me crazy.

The same applies for a stay-at-home mom, a few hundreds of dollars can really affect your taxes bottom line.

When DH had a great job and I was teaching preschool part time that little bit of money cost us an average of $300 on our taxes. So you really have to decide if its worth it or not.

After you sign up is there a certain amount of jobs you have to take? Or can you just pick and choose however you want?

Generally you can choose what you want however you might not be able to get everything you want due to limits and rotations.

For those of you that signed up how are the jobs doing? I hope that they are going great! I am thinking about signing up too.

I just received my check for my first job!! So happy. I can only take jobs that are on weekends or at night since I don't drive and boyfriend has to be here to take me. But it is going great for me. My dad is still making decent money with it but he is retired and bored. This keeps him occupied.
