I came home yesterday and found a greyhound laying on my wheelchair ramp outside. so I just let him be and checked on him around midnight and he was still there so I let him in the house, he has to belong to someone he has an expensive collar on and an old tag that we can't make out the wording, he seems very gentle and scared, but did jump up on the bed last night to sleep so off my dh went to sleep in the den..hehe, he's layed around all day today in the house, how do I go about finding the owner ? I took him to my vet but still don't think he'll get much exposure that way the vet is very small...I placed an ad, but I feel so bad for this guy, should I just let him go and let him wonder back to his home ?

I would keep him safe until I found his home if I was able to do so. Alert shelters, place ads, hang up signs and keep him safe as long as you are able. If he knew his way home he probably would not have stayed on your porch for so long, but I'm not much of a dog person so I'm not sure. Maybe he needs a new home. So many people just put their pets out when they are no longer convenient.

You could contact greyhound rescue groups in your area, most pet greyhounds are rescued (adopted) through organizations that work with the tracks.
I googled "greyhound rescue, NC" and there were several listed. Please don't let him loose to just wander on home. When dogs get lost or out of their regular territories, they often become disoriented and can't find their way back.

Did your vet scan him? Most animals nowadays have a chip in them that can be scanned and it has their info on it. It's the size of a grain of rice so you won't be able to feel it, but most vets now have scanners. If yours doesn't, take him to a shelter and they should have one.

I have a greyhound myself, and they are very timid. If he's ok with you, I'd say keep him if you can until the owner is found. Sending him to a shelter would just be traumatic for him. Poor grey....lost and alone :guilty: They're such awesome dogs. Congrats to you for taking care of him :thumbsup2 If you need anything...tips or anything, let me know. Also, keep us updated!

There are many online forums for greyhound rescue (adoption) and most have lost dog message boards. Here's one I found for North Carolina - based on your location in your profile. You can find lots of others using a search engine.

Ok, my vets very small and didn't have a scanner, where can I get this done at. I must remind the dog of someone because he doesn't seem to shy around us, and my dd is in a wheelchair and he keeps coming up to her and is very calm with her. I want to try the scan thing, maybe that what all these numbers on the collar are, i don't know...we'll see.

Any major shelter or large vet will have the scanner. Start with your local humane society, they will have one or can refer you to one at a location closer to you. For helping this dog.:goodvibes

All racing Greys are chipped and a good majority of pet Greyhounds are ex-racers. So the chances are good that your dog is chipped.

If you go to the www.homeagain.com website, there is an area on the right side of the page where you can enter your Zipcode and it will tell you the vets that do microchipping. These would be the same vets that would have a scanner.

Otherwise, as PP's have stated, just go to your local shelter and have them scan the dog for you.

And thanks for taking care of a lost dog! There is some frantic owner out there who is going to be so grateful that there beloved dog was well taken care of!

Well, I called a vet but they were about to close and didn't want to wait on me to bring him ...animal control said they would wait for me to bring him over to get scanned, so off we go ...which I tell you he's not to thrilled to be taking a road trip, gosh I hope this works, he's really a sweet dog.

I hope you find out the info. I think you should keep him though.:)

I don't know, sounds like some sort of an angel for your DD the way he is so gentle with her. Hey if you cannot find the owner, I bet your DD can suggest an option.:cutie:

Does he have tatoos in his ears, if so he can be tracked that way as well. There are alot of greyhound rescues that do a ton of adoptions. I also go on a greyhound forum I could post something there but need more info i.e. tatoos, description or better yet a picture of him.
Thanks

Any news? I am so hoping he is chipped. Contrary to popular belief, not all Greyhounds are chipped. None of our 4 greyhounds have been chipped when we got them.

Many prayers to that baby, I am sure he belongs to somebody that is missing him tonight. I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you are being so kind and taking so much time for him. A true angel he found! :goodvibes

Wow, how fortunate that he came upon your door and you took him in! :goodvibes:

Ok, I took him to animal control, he did have a chip... . The family was at work, so animal control wanted to keep him over night, I said no and got the phone number and we went back home. I spoke with the owner who lives 10 miles from me:scared1: and she came and got him, the kicker was, he had been missing since sunday night, somehow he gotten away from the house whenever one of the kids opened the front door and the reason he was so friendly with my dd is because the lady is in a wheelchair :thumbsup2 and their house has a wheelchair ramp on the side of their house like mine...geez that was a smart doggie. The lady offered me 300.00 reward money  oh that was hard to turn down, but I couldn't in my rightful mind take money from someone for returning a furbaby. The doggie went wild with excitment whenever he seen them, it was priceless ! all is well at my house tonight, and my new 5 month old puppy says thank God...hehehe:rotfl2:

Yay! :yay:

It makes sense that he picked your house, with the ramp and all. He probably thought he had found the right house. And it was very nice of the owners to give you a reward--I would have too; you took great care of him.
