We want to buy the 7 days of Universal Parks but only if we are assured the FOTL passes for all of our visits - BUT - I do not want to stay at the resort for 7 nights. We were thinking of staying the first 2 nights and then moving to our rental home for the remainder of our 2 week stay. We will only go to Universakl if we have FOTL. Can you buy them or will they be valid even adfter we check out?

You can buy them, prices vary depending on the date. If you are staying for 2 nights at HRH, that will give you 3 days of FOTL. Remember the Express passes you buy are only good for 1 time on each ride, while the hotel keys are unlimited. When are you going? You can check the prices for your dates online.

I am going Sun. March 2nd for 2 or 3 nights. Not thrilled with the rate I am getting on the phone ($269/nt without passes!).

I would rather just buy the FOTL passes and stay in our rental home but I have no idea if this is possible.

FOTL passes are excellent especially when staying onsite. However, we have never bought Express Plus passes in our other 5 visits to Orlando both in February and July because if you get to the parks early you can get on the rides with no lines or minimal lines. I would have thought going in March the lines would be pretty quiet in any case.

I don't think you will need it when you go but, if you do, you can always purchase express after you get to the parks. Like has been mentioned before though: the express you purhcase is only good for one time on each ride and show.

As others have pointed out, there are two kinds of Express. There is the hotel FOTL that is tied to your room key. This gives you Express access from the minute you check in to the close of both of the parks on the day you check out. There are no restrictions on how many times you can ride each particular ride. You would need to book 6 nights at an onsite hotel to be assured of all 7 days of express access.

Then there is the express pass you can buy. This is a one day only pass. You can buy one for just one park or the slightly more expensive one that allows you both parks. You are limited to one express line access per ride for that day. For this option, you would need to buy 7 express passes - or one for each day of your ticket to be assured of 7 days of FOTL.

None of the express passes are tied to your 7 day ticket. They are extras that you procure either by staying in an onsite resort (your express is actually your room key) or an additional pass you purchase each day either online or when you get there.

But, as others wiser than I have said, you probably won't need them for the first week in March.

:thumbsup2 Yeah, saying "I'm only going if I get FOTL" is kind of silly. If you go early, especially if you're going to be there during the week, you'll be able to get everything done without a problem, and without many lines. The only time you may have any kinds of problems will be on Friday and Saturdays.
Just to put it in perspective and let you know how advantageous getting there early is:
I took my daughter to Universal for her B-day July 21st. This is during the peak of busy season, and we had tickets for BMG at 3p.m. which meant we needed to be at the front of USF at 2:30.
We got to the front gate at 8a.m. They opened early at 8:30. We did Spiderman twice, both times by ourselves, skipped over to JP and rode the flyers 4 times without any lines. Rode JPRA alone. Played in Camp Jurassic for an hour, played in the discovery Center for 30 minutes. Hit flying unicorn twice, rode the sky trolley, carosuessel, one fish two fish, cat in the hat, and hung out with a friend who works at Universal on his lunch break. Then we did Jimmy Nuetron, MIB, ET, and woody woodpecker all before 2:30.
YOU CAN DO IT! I HAVE FAITH IN YOU!
