We have oly stayed at All -star resorts. We Are thinking of renting a rv and staying at the camp ground at Fort Wilderness. If any one has done this please let us know how it went. Its a lot of money to spend if its not a great trip.

I'd suggest you visit the camping boards here on the DIS. In fact, I'll move this post over there and I bet you'll get lots of really great responses.

The folks over there are very experienced with staying at FW and can really help with this kind of question more-so than we here on the resorts boards.

Rhonda is one of the mods over there; she's a very smart camper. ;)

Good luck!

I think you'd love it! Especially if you have kids. A couple of things to consider though to make it a little more economical. Gas prices are high right now and a RV can be a gas guzzler. If you are renting the RV just to go to Fort Wilderness, you might consider renting one if FL. There is even a company in Orlando that will rent you an RV or travel trailer and take it to the fort and set it up for you. This board would be a great place for tips on what to bring with you.

A camping or RV vacation is just so different than staying in a hotel. You won't find many on this board that don't love it. We are a family of five (me, DH, DS7, DD4.5 and DS 4.5) I can't imagine trying to spend a week in a hotel room. We only lasted in the parks about 6 to 8 hours each day. We would head back to FW, and each kid sorta did there own thing. One would ride a bike, one play in the sand, one might nap, and there was room for my DH and I just to sit outside and relax.

It definitely is not a money saving option but it sure is an awesome experience, there is a lot to see and do at the fort.

You could also rent a cabin at Fort Wilderness, which sleeps 6 and has a full kitchen. It will be close to what it would cost you to rent a RV and the camp site and be just like RVing except you are not moving.

LOL!

Pooh4me has a great idea -- it may actually be less expensive, depending on the time of year, to rent one of the Wilderness Cabins for your first FW experience!

Either way, you will love FW! It's peaceful, lots of room to spread out, and a wonderful place to come "home" to at the end of a busy day at the parks! :goodvibes

I will second the Cabins. Stayed in them several times over the years and my family of 5 had a blast.

Thanks so Much I have been looking into renting a Rv .We ahve found a place that will deliver it to the campground and set it up .We have only been to the all star movies and music . But were having a reunion and some family members are statying at FW . Would like to be close. It also looks so far out from everything? I am a plaining freak as it is and want everything perfect.

Thanks Elaine

Just got back yesterday from our stay at the Fort. Our friends wanted to go with us, and as we told them we had to camp in order to make it financially feasable (they don't own a camper) - they rented from a company there in Orlando and had it delivered to their site at FW. It worked wonderfully for them! The camper was clean, large, well appointed - they ordered 'set ups' for each family member so they didn't even have to pack towels or dishes!. The company had the camper set up within 20 minutes of our arrival in Orlando, ran through basic operations with our friends and we were at MK in plenty of time for rides before Wishes! (and we didn't check in until 4:30 that afternoon!) Have to say - it worked very well for all of us!

Hi AnnieM! Do you know which company they used? Was it a pop-up or a hard-sided camper? And, would you happen to know the approx. cost?

Thanks! :goodvibes

Rhonda, try this link...

If I remember correctly, a travel trailer was about $900. a week, but the security deposit was pretty steep. (maybe another $700 to $800 :confused3)
It can still be cost effective if you are a family size bigger than 4, as long as you can live without the security deposit for your vacation week.

Yep- that is the web site they got their RV from. I got it from this board! They just took my friend's credit card info for the deposit, and they got it back when they didn't damage the RV. I was really impressed! And the convenience of having all of us (9) just a few campsites away couldn't be beat for those last minute changes of plans!
