I have been lurking on this board for a couple of weeks and decided to go public. You'all seem like a friendly, welcoming bunch so I will just jump right in.

We are long time WDW fans and DVC members since 2000. Although I love the villas, I have long wanted to stay in a cabin at Ft. Wilderness. (We always camped when I was a kid and it just looked cool!) In 2013, we spent an evening at HDDR, which just reinforced my thinking. I have two nephews getting married in 2015 and they are each planning a Disney honeymoon (one at WDW, the other at Aulani) as my wedding gift. So, I am points short for my own vacation in 2015. A cabin is appealing since the accommodations are similar to the 1-bedroom villa we usually stay at.

We had already asked my two youngest nieces (ages 13 and 10) to join us on our WDW trip in July 2015. They are Disney veterans with trips both with their parents and with us. When I mentioned staying at Fort Wilderness and taking things a bit slower, they balked. They wanted to stay at a "regular" resort and visit parks all day, every day like they are used to doing.

Thinking my dream was dying, I changed our 2 night post-cruise stay in December 2014 to a Cabin. I figured I would get the Fort out of my system, or at least have had two nights there if I never got the opportunity to go back. Well, we LOVED it!! I had rented a golf cart and we had so much fun riding around the campground. It was too cold to swim, but I took a ton of pictures to show my nieces. Before we left, I went ahead and booked a cabin stay at the end of our July dates using a bounce back offer.

Back at home, I had the girls over during Christmas break and unleashed my plan to convince them that staying at Ft. Wilderness was the greatest idea ever. Well, it worked! (The golf cart was what really did the trick!) We are starting with 3 nights at Grand Floridian villas (remaining DVC points) followed by 3 nights at Yacht Club. Lastly, we will spend 4 nights in a Ft. Wilderness cabin. Yippee! OUr plan is to hit the parks hard the first 6 days so that we can relax and take it easy at the Fort.

So far, I have rented a golf cart and made Hoop De Doo reservations for our 2nd night. I am also thinking of signing up the girls for horseback riding. They are interested, but have never been on a horse. We also talked about letting them rent bikes a couple of times. And, I trust that the pool will be a big draw in July.

For those of you who are still with me..... What am I missing? Are there other activities that are "must do's" with 10/13 year old girls? Are they too old for the campfire singalongs? Is it fun to watch the fireworks and boat parade from the dock or would we be better off making our way to the Contemporary's observation deck? Is there enough to do at the Fort to keep us busy for three days, or should I plan a couple of park days? What about laundry? Where is it located and how much does it cost?

Are there things that we need to take along on this trip that we normally would take camping but not to Disney World? I was wondering about bug spray? Beach towels? Frisbees or other outdoor games?

We are all really exciting about this trip! Any suggestions or advice will be much appreciated!

I do not think they would be too old to at least check out the campfire sing-a-long. The movie afterwards might even be something they want to watch. The firework view is not the best from the beach since BLT was built. Something that might be fun is to plan a late picnic on the beach at FW to watch the water pageant.

I would definitely plan to rent a bicycle as I had a lot of fun at the age of 16 riding all around FW during my first stay there. I would also suggest taking the trail that goes from FW to WL at least once, using the one that goes along the water. If you do this in the morning, you might see deer. I would also suggest taking the boat to MK, even if you are not going to MK at least once. It is my favorite transportation at WDW. You could also see about renting boats while there and exploring Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon if you have not done that.

The laundry facilities are located at the comfort stations. There is one in the cabin sections at the second pool located between the 2500 and 2700 loops. There are also many comfort stations throughout the camping loops. I am not sure of the cost.

I think you might want to bring some beach towels and just hang out at the beach some. You could play volleyball or other games in the sand. I usually take bug spray to WDW whether I stay at FW or elsewhere just in case.

I think you could have enough to do at FW as long as the girls are willing to relax and just hang out for some of the time they are at FW. If they are the type that have to be going constantly, then you might want to plan either some park hours or even just a resort hopping or visiting DTD.

With girls those ages and the current popularity of the Hunger Games series, I would look into archery if I were you. I've never done it at the Fort but I understand that the Fort has that to offer. You might want to see if that is something they would be interested in.

And, I trust that the pool will be a big draw in July.

Are they too old for the campfire singalongs?
. . . as a senior citizen, I find I am the right age
. . . so do my 12-yr-old granddaughters

Is it fun to watch the fireworks and boat parade from the dock or would we be better off making our way to the Contemporary's observation deck?
. . . why not do both
. . . although, the view from the beach of OK

Is there enough to do at the Fort to keep us busy for three days, or should I plan a couple of park days?
. . . MORE THAN ENOUGH

What about laundry?
. . . this can also keep you busy
. . . not my idea of a vacation, but gotta be done

Are there things that we need to take along on this trip that we normally would take camping but not to Disney World?
. . . the camping list should be fine

I was wondering about bug spray?
. . . you can bring some
. . . but, we do train our bugs not to bother our guests

Beach towels?
. . . towels are available
. . . but, I like BIG towels, so we take beach towels

Frisbees or other outdoor games?
. . . always a winner at The Fort
. . . plus, your kids will have OTHER KIDS asking to join

NOTE: The one BIGGIE about The Fort, is that we are more friendly than ANY other
resort. The guests, like at any campground, tend to talk to one another. The kids even
make Friends for the next vacation! Try that at a WDW resort or even DVC
.

Welcome to the Camping forums!

The Scupper has given his usual great description of the things I like to do at the Fort. Your plans sound perfect. Wear the kids out doing the parks and then spend a few days at the Fort being a little more relaxed. I would probably plan on some time at the parks. Like tobikaye said, the boats to MK are some of the best magic at the Fort. There is also a smaller resort shuttle that runs between WL and CR. That's fun too and a quick way to get to those resorts to do a little shopping or catch a meal.

Your nieces may resist a little now, but that's probably because they only know what the other resorts are like. Wait until they get there and realize it is a whole new experience.

I second what everyone else has said.

It is a very different experience from the other resorts - and that's a good thing!

There are no towels at the pool. I bring my own for pool time.

The canoeing is fun.

Bike path to Wilderness Lodge is very nice.

Golf carts are the BEST! So much fun. It is one of our favorite 'rides'.

Best thing about the cabins is no shared walls...and the deck...and the bedroom.

I always taken bug spray - never needed it.

Some of my favorite Disney memories were made while staying at the cabins. Hope you enjoy your stay!

Wow! Thanks for all the ideas. I will investigate all your option, Rusty. I still have six months to plan!

What about laundry? Where is it located and how much does it cost?

We are all really exciting about this trip! Any suggestions or advice will be much appreciated!

The laundry is located in the comfort stations with in the camping loops, not sure about the cabin loops. :confused3 The cost for the washer and dryers are 2.00 each, there are change machines in the laundry rooms and also vending machines for laundry supplies and soda.

The machines are full size, in the 2000 loop where we stayed there was 4 washers and a commercial sized washer that cost more, and 6 dryers.

Pontoon Boats for nice leisurely ride around Bay Lake or the speed it up with the little blue racer boats
