Hi All
My first post here and am excited about having a new place to hang out at. I was wondering what peoples experience's have been staying at Fort Wilderness cabins. We usually stay at Dixie landings or Carribean beach. This time we are thinking about staying at the cabins for the kitchen facility and the in laws may join us in their winnibago for a couple of days.
Is the service as good as the rest of the hotels? Is it worth the extra money? is there any units that are available with a queen/king bed? Thanks for the help and any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance Dave

Howdy Dave  and Welcome to the DIS--

First off, you might want to check out the Camping Forum here on the Boards. You can find it by clicking Here for the Camping Board

Now...on to the cabins.

We stayed in a cabin in January, and LOVED it. The setup is like this:

1 bedroom with a queen (or a double) and a set of twin bunk beds. Full bathroom, full kithen with full size appliances. Then in the living room there is a sofa, and 2 chairs, plus a Murphy Bed that pulls out of the wall.

If your ILs join you at FW for a few days, they will have to get a site of their own, as there is only room for one car at each cabin.

We loved the cabins--there was maid service every day, they would run the dishwasher if there were dishes in in it, and they left the cutest little towel critters, for DS. (We were left more towels than a family of 3 could humanly use!)

The only downside to the cabins is the internal transportation if you are relying on Disney tranport, you have to catch a purple bus to one of the outposts, and then get on the appropriate bus or boat to get where you are going. We never waited too long for a bus, but others have experienced less than quick wait times.

Hope this helps

Debbie

I am also a cabin fan. I think it gives adults more privacy to put the kids in the back bedroom and then have the living area for watching TV and relaxing. I have been known to cook an entire Christmas dinner in the cabin, and really think the kitchen is great! We have had great mousekeeping--though I know I don't run a dishwasher at home for four glasses!

We love the cabins! Have stayed in them many times over the years. They are lovely and very clean and the housekeeping comes regularly, just like in a resort. Lots of space and real cute "theming" too.

WDWIG (which I think is now allears.net) has great photos of the cabins, inside and out. These give you a great idea of what you'd be getting. Check it out! :)

We're thinking of staying at FWCabins as well for the first two days of our upcoming trip. Does anyone know if you can rent the cabins for two nights only? Every time I try booking it on the Disney site it comes back with OKW or one of the other villas. We're already staying at OKW for the remainder of the week(renting points) but we'd love to stay at the cabins for the first two nights especially since we're doing Hoop de Doo our first nite...DS's favorite. Anyone know??

Thanks:teeth:

The cabins rent nightly, not by week, or at least that's always how it's been. If the website is squirrely, just call to make a res.

we really enjoyed the cabins and they were economical as well.

my cousin and her little nephew slept on the main bed, my two sisters did the bunk beds and my hubby and I shared the murphy bed (pull out of the wall) in the living room. It was cozy, but we fit all 6 of us in there and had enough room. We loved the kitchen. We shipped down some boxes of groceries beforehand which saved money. We ate almost every breakfast and lunch in the cabin. We always did a late lunch and took a break each day to rest then, then went back to the parks at night.

we enjoyed the nice shade trees and whole atmosphere of Ft Wilderness. We stayed in a camper as kids and loved it then too. It was very quiet and nice to be so close to nature. We even got to enjoy the pool etc. Definitely a great idea to try if you want something different or want to save money.

We're thinking about trying the cabins as well so I've enjoyed reading this thread. We usually stay at a Deluxe resort and we love it. What is prompting us to consider the cabins is two things:

1 - we always spend time at FW. We love it. We've done all kinds of activities such as canoeing, hay ride, walking trails, and the campfire singalong.

2 - we're tired of paying $100+ for a nice sit-down meal at WDW. So, we figure why not save $$ and cook some meals in.

I also have discovered that they offer great discounts for the cabins. Right now AP rate is $155 - we always pay more than that for a deluxe.

I'm trying to convince my husband - I think I'm getting there.
So hopefully I'll have first-hand experience with the cabins real soon.

The FW cabins are wonderful. We have not stayed anywhere else the last 5 times we have been to WDW. We have adult children now that still think they have to be included in our vacations, who am I kidding I love it! We did rent 2 cabins though because 2 of the kids are married so there were 7 of us. Rent a golf cart if you can, it is worth it and lots of entertainment too, you don't feel quite so isolated, (not that that is a bad thing.) We ate out almost every evening but had breakfast in the cabin and made sandwiches for TL and BB (we love the water parks) Towards the end of the week our kids were sick of eating at restaurants so we grilled out a few nights and it tasted so good, and a heck of a lot cheaper. It is so nice in the morning that we don't all have to wake up and the same time. In a hotel room I think it would be a bit different. It just seems more private to me. I might want to try the villas but my family just loves FW. You would have a great time. Crazy as it might seem but everyone loved going to the grocery store and picking out their snacks and drinks, just like when they were little.
