Does anyone know anything about Fort Gorden, Ga? DD24 is getting sent there for 6 months in June.

Ohh I'm jealous. I love Ft Gordon, GA. It's not the nicest army post around though I will admit. Is your daughter going there for AIT, which is where she learns her army job? Do you know what her army job(MOS) will be?

The nearest big city to Gordon is Augusta, GA. It's not exactly a booming city with lots to do but we did like it. If you want to ever fly into see your daughter you'll have to book through US Air because thats all I've ever been able to fly to get there.

If you'll list your questions I'll try to answer them or ask my husband. He is signal, which Gordon is the headquarters for the signal corp.

Yes she is going for training for her army job. She just told me last night so I don't know the technical name for her job but it involves radio repair. She mentioned something about climping ontop a blackhawk yesterday!:scared1:

Is the area safe for a 24 year old young lady?

I completely understand your fear:rotfl: the first time I saw my husband(not known for being graceful) climbing all over a blackhawk I never fainted and then in the first rotation to Iraq, I received a picture of him hanging out of it while in the air:scared:

Anyways, I think that Gordon is pretty safe. It's a pretty quiet post and for the most part it's just a training post. She should use her smarts and not go out to the city alone at dark and take unnecessary risks.

Augusta is a very fun town and very military friendly. I lived there for 5 years and we found that while they appreciate Ft. Gordon, it is not the lifeblood of Augusta. There is a lot of other stuff going on in the area as opposed to being just a "military town."

Lots of good nightlife...people go out every night of the week over there. I guess that could be good or bad depending how you look at it. ;) Very decent shopping there...about anything you could really want. Restaurants on every corner...Augustans LOVE to eat out.

That being said, like any medium sized city, there are some areas to avoid at night but I think anyone local can probably point those out to her.

DH and I would move back there in a heartbeat. Hope she has a great time!

She will be very happy to hear this! Hopefully she'll be able to handle the freedom and not get in trouble by going out every night! I'm glad to hear its a nice town and especially glad they have good restaurants! Something to look forward to when we visit!

I am here at Fort Gordon Ga. My dh is stationed here. We have been here for over 3 years. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I will happy to help you if I can.

I grew up in Augusta. My father was retired military and I was born at Eisenhower hosp and went there my entire childhood. I still remember that old hospital smell....
Ft Gordon is a big Army base with alot to do. I use to go Horseback riding at the stables on the base. I volunteered at the childcare center when I was a teenager. It is a nice base and there really is so much to do there that you could stay there without leaving for months.
Augusta is a big city that is really stretched out. Ft Gordon sits kinda on the outskirts of Augusta and Grovetown. Alot of military looking for cheaper housing move to Grovetown which has alot of trailer parks.
Augusta has alot to do in it. There is always some festival going on downtown in the Riverwalk area.
There is towns of shopping and a huge mall there too.
A majority of the population has some ties to the military whether it be they are active duty, retired, a dependent, or just work on base.
There are bad areas just like any place, but you just have to ask where to avoid and then not go there.
It's gets really crazy during Masters Week but is a relatively slow moving place any other time of year.

Ft. Gordon is in Augusta, GA. There is alot of shopping and eating places.
Alot of families leave town the week of the Masters due to the schools here are out for Spring Break. We usually see alot of people from Augusta at WDW that week.
