Formal night question

I have a question on clothing for the formal night. My husband does not own a suit and we really cannot afford one after paying for our cruise. He doesn't want to rent a tux either (again, cost, as well as no guarantee that it will actually fit since he is a hard size to fit properly). He does own a very nice pair of black pants that he wears with a dress jacket that is dark charcoal. He wears this with a silvery grey shirt, silver tie and black shoes. He looks very sharp but it isn't a "suit". Is this acceptable for a formal night?

You will get a bunch of different responses but I'll throw mine in before this thread possibly digresses into another formal debate!:duck:

When I first read this I missed the part where you said he had a jacket. He'll be fine!!!! Don't worry about the clothes and have a fabulous time. As long as he showers and doesn't show up to dinner in a tank with a hairy back (eewwww) then I'm good with about anything!

From what you've said he will not have an issue at all. I just got back last weekend and the formal dress varied greatly....the most common were suits...a smattering of tuxes...and yes there were even a few people in just polos..and one or two with shorts!!...but really I know people like to have it be as formal as possible....but a nice jacket, black pants and colored shirt and tie i think can look very formal...and it will probably be more formal than most.

relax, its' your vacation. you and your husband have worked hard for this trip so you should enjoy yourselves. the dress on formal/semi nights runs the gamut from tuxes and gowns to shorts. i usually wear a cocktail dress and a dinner dress and cropped pants with tops the rest of the time. my husband will only wear a blazer with either khaki or grey slacks. my son has out grown his blazer and i am not buying him a new one so he will wear a dress shirt and tie. i will have to fight to get him in that.

the point is that you should be comfortable. you husband's clothes sound very handsome.

this will be our 4th cruise.

Thanks for the responses! I thought that would be ok but just wanted to check. I am going to wear black velvet pants, a soft black crochet shell with a camisole underneath and a pink silk chinese style jacket (hot pink) and nice jewelry so I think we will look fine. We don't do formal occasions enough to warrant fancy dresses (or even cocktail dresses) and new suits. My DD7 probably won't even get dressed up for formal night as it will be better for everyone if she just goes and eats with the other kids.

Thanks again!
