Forgoing Valentine's for the Budget. anyone else?

I told dh yesterday that I would rather we didn't exchange anything on valentine's day as (1) it's on a monday which he works late so we can't do anything that day anyway; but more importantly (2) I don't want to waste money on it. I do have something for DS I got at the target 75% off toy sale, but other than that, I'm not interested! I know dh loves me, he knows I love him, why waste money we don't have? I told him not to even get me one of those expensive cards!

Anyone with me?

Been married for almost 26 years. IMO, Valentine's Day is for amateurs. We say "I love you" in little ways everyday. I don't need chocolates or roses in order to know that.

Us here too! But we never really do anything $$ on V-day. DH and I exchange cards and I have in the past gotten $1 stuffed animals for the kids the previous year after Vday sale. I didn't do that last year, so this year i got the kids some candy that I'll put into their lunches on Monday to surprise them.

I absolutely HATE going out to dinner on V-day. DH and I did it once when we were dating and never again - the wait was forever and they had us packed in elbow to elbow with the next table. I am looking at some new recipes and will likely make us a nice meal on Monday.

I see it as too commercial a way to tell someone I love them...no need to spend $$ for that! In fact the best ways to show it are without cost (if you REALLY love me - clean the whole house - now that's love! ). Dh and I do have a tradition that costs some $ however, he buys me flowers the day AFTER V-day, when they are really, really cheap.

Good thing we both appreciate the other's frugal ways....

I totally agree!!! I think Valentine's is just a commercial holiday. I don't need 1 day in the year where you are suppose to show your love and go all out, you should do that all year. Valentine's Day was cute the first year we were together now I'm over it, my husband feels the same. I did pick up some chocolate for each of the kids and a cheap card for my hubby but that's it here.

DH and I will go out to eat when we can find anytime alone. The boys will get something really small like acts body wash for the DS and a small toy for DGS. That's it in my house this year.

trying to..we have been hammered lately (all started wih a $675 plumbing bill first week of January) so I suggested to DH going light, maybe a bag of m&m's kinda thing. I hope he agrees because I just have some candy for DS and a 6-pack for DH.

Yep..30 years here and we never do anything for Valentines. Our daughter's bday is Valentines day so we're always having a party for her and such..we get little goodies for the grandkids, but that's it.

I've only been married for 10 and we still don't do anything for valentines day for each other. To me it's a kids holiday. We got our kids candy bouquets, but won't bother with stuff for each other.

We're going to WDW without the kids in April, we have plenty of time to express our love for each other then

I told my dh the same thing. We are going to WDW in April (on our anniverasry)so we are saving the $ as well. I'm not big on flowers or cards, I have always been this way. So he usually will suprise me with flowers on non holidays which means soo much more. We are going out to eat but we usually do one night of the weekend anyway. He has to work late on Monday night he is a chef at restaurant that he runs so he will be busy that night. I do wish he would be home with me but I know this is a busy night for him.

I did buy the kids Valentines, my ds13, dd3 and I will have b-days in the next couple of months before our trip so we will all probably get WDW gc and stuff for our trip.

We never really do much for Valentine's day, since its also my birthday ... but we are forgoing both of those holidays this year to save the budget! I usually give the kids something small, but this year I'm just going to make the family a cake or cupcakes and homemade ice cream, and call it good!

We have always just gotten each other cards and this year instead of candy we're giving each of the kids a DS game. Flowers are beautiful but they'll be dead in a week and there goes $50. I'd rather DH show his love all year with little things (like emptying the dishwasher) that cost nothing than spending money on just one day.

I do all the Holidays from our first year of marriage till now our 30th year!! Even with the smallest budget like this year! Total $6.00. 2 items each, Dd, Dh, and I will get 1 Disney Button each @ $.69 each, and $.99 boxes of chocolates for each of us! from Walgreens. Just these little thing will make our Valentine's Day!!

For my up coming Birthday all I want is a single orange carnation like the ones I had at my wedding!

I don't need expensive stuff to celebrate the moments of my life!!

We usually do dinner and candy or flowers but since we are going on vacation soon we are making dinner at home and putting the money in our spending money envelopes.

We are cutting back... Exchanging 90% off chocolate, 75% off toys for the kids. May make chocolate strawberries. I'm not really a card person, but we do exchange the same card year after year if I can find it... Like others have said, you don't have to spend a lot to have a nice holiday.

We're going out to dinner. There's a local restaurant having a steak and lobster dinner for two for $32. We'll also take along DS. It will be a rare weeknight dinner out.

In our 25 years together, we've done big things and small things, but we always do SOMEthing.

My favorite year might have been the 1st one after we married....DH stayed up after I went to bed, and made cookies that spelled out "I love you." I had the cookies and a mimosa for breakfast that morning!

I redeemed points from a reward site to get a $25 Applebee's gift card. I'm taking DH out for lunch there on V day. Other than that we're doing the normal nothing.

We don't really do anything - I warned DH when we first married that he was NEVER to give me flowers on Valentines Day, since the price is so marked up, and I'd rather have a larger bouquet for the same price on any other day!

We're going out on the 15th so we can use one of our restaurant.com certificates! I printed out cards on the computer for kids to bring to school.

Us too. We'll be at Disney in two weeks. We were going to go for dinner but I'd much rather put the money away for our trip. We'll be eating out at Disney for over a week. I'd rather save the money until we go.
I'll get something little for the kids, and we will make a nice dinner and watch a movie. I've never been big on Valentine's day.
