Foreign students that want to work in the USA

I work in a parish office. This morning 3 college students from Poland stop in my office to ask me if I know of any apartments they can rent.

Anyway, they told me a recruiter from Quad Graphics came over and hired them for the summer to work. They paid over $600 for their airplane tickets, money to this recruiter for finding them jobs, had to pay for their personal insurance, they told me it came to $2000.00 just to get here. Quad Graphics, is a big printing plant with over 10 plants in the United States. They print your coupons you receive in your papers, they print "Play Boy" and many other magazines.

They need a place to stay from July 1-Oct. 1. No one will rent them apartment, cause it is under 6 months. Quad Graphics has apartments and they won't rent to them, cause it is under 6 months. I called Quad and asked them what the deal was. They bring these kids over here, and I felt that should have been part of the recruiting. She told me they don't have any more apartments to rent out.

I feel so bad I wasn't able to find them a place to rent. I called 5 people in our parish that have ties to apartment places. No luck.

Why do recruiters do this, to these poor kids. Quad Graphics is a good place to work. You work 12 hour days, 3 days one week, 4 the next. One of t he students told me he wants to work everyday, which is possible, Quad lets people do that. It is almost going to take 6-8 weeks to recoup their $2000 expense just to get here.

My prayer-St. Christopher-please help these weary travlers find an apartment so they can work.

It's commonplace here in NJ at the shore to see foreign students working the rides on the boardwalk.

In Seaside, most of the workers for the rides were from Poland. I give them a lot of credit coming here for the summer and trying to have a better job/life. They work very hard and probably get paid $7.00 an hour. It's very easy to find summer housing though...a lot of people stuff 10 in a house...

Their work ethic is better than many people I know.

Sending good thoughts their way.

That's is awful! When I went to England on a Student Work Abroad visa, the company gave you listings of apartment agencies to help you find a place!
Have you tried the University to see if they will rent dorm rooms to them? Most Universities do that in the summer months!
Your a great person for helping them out!

We are 40 miles from any universities. We are such a farming community. Quad Graphics bought an old canning factory and made it into a Printing Press. They have to be the biggest employer around these parts. There are not many apartments, just mostly houses. Our town has 2,250 people, a smaller town 2 miles away have 750 people. My mother-in-law's town has 38 people. We are completely surrounded by farm land.

Most people that work at Quad Graphics are able to find and buy homes, not much in the apartments. We have some nice apartments in town going for $750. They told me they are prepared to pay up to $1000 a month, yikes. I was looking at apartments for them that go for $450.

This is just going to eat at me all day.

Does anyone in your area rent out rooms? If they're just here to work, they may not need a whole apartment anway. A room will give them a place to stash their stuff and sleep. Some boarding houses may include meals, too. See if anyone in your church as a spare room or basement they'd like to rent out for some extra cash over the summer.

Maybe you could also put up a sign at the grocery store??

It couldn't hurt....

Something like "Wanted - rooms to rent - 2 months "

How about a Motel? A lot of places have weekly and monthly rates for "Extended Stays".
