Just like to say that DVC "NEEDS" to address this because it IS a problem. On our first trip home in January 2005, we were given a NON-SMOKING room due to medical reasons, DD13 has asthma. Our NON-SMOKING room had indeed been smoked in and when we complained we were basically told "TUFF S_ _ _!
There was a snow storm in the northeast and we couldn't be moved because there were NO OTHER VACANICIES! I am giving it one last try at HH this summer and if it happens again, unfortunately we will be selling our DVC, why go if you can't enjoy your vacation???? :confused3 Sad, but true!

I've noticed the VWL has a spot off around the corner of the entry with rockers and ashtrays. It's a great alternative for those who don't wish to smoke on their balcony and risk bothering other guests. I haven't noticed areas like this at BWVs or BCVs. Do any of the other DVC resorts have small out of the way smoking areas like VWL?

I know @SSR they have ashtrys w/rocking chairs outside of the AP (I guess that's not really 'out of the way' though) and they have a couple on the walking pathway to DTD. Probably some others I didn't see.
I don't know about the rest of the DVC's.

I noticed Old Key West has a separate smoking area near the Turtle Pond Pool. There are a couple of picnic tables under a shelter and they have designated this as the smoking area, according to small signs. Wish all the DVC resorts and regular resort pools would do this, so the smokers have a place to go and the non-smokers can sit away from there.

I have had a collapased lung this winter and had to have 20% of my lung removed..I never ever in my whole life can breath in second hand smoke or run the risk of having it collapase immediatelly...should I be made to be on guard the whole time I am on vacation while I am on the look out for smokers at my home resort..I spent three months in the hospital never have smoked my self..This was totally spontanous...I shoud not be made to be on the look out for smoke it should be banned at all resorts for the safety of all involved..This is something I wold not want to expose my children too after what I have been through//

All I can say is I hope they go to all non smoking rooms at all Disney hotels and resorts. They have done it here in Ontario and it is better for business this way even our restaurants are now all non smoking and it is nice to not have to worry about having somone smoking 3 tables away from you while you are eating dinner or having to get a hotel room that smells like and ashtray.

OK a few things i would like to point;

1) I think the rest of the world must laugh hysterically at us making any issue out of someone else smoking in our vicinity when we have a much greater chance of serious health issues breathing the air created in our cities on a daily basis, or swimming in some of our bays and rivers....I love it when people complain about second hand smoke, and then ride off in their monster SUV. I promise anyone on this board that owns an SUV, that you are without a doubt spreading more poison per capita then any chain smoker out there....So I propose Disney become an SUV free zone....or better yet we can have special SUV parking areas far away from the entrance to the hotels, so that my children are not exposed to the harmful emmissions...(of course i am being a wise guy, but I hope you see my point)...

2) Probably one of our biggest health concerns in this country is obesity and the kinds of foods we eat....can i take it for granted that disney will now be a cheeseburger free zone....all of this consumption leads to heart disease, and higher insurance rates for us all. Therefore i can not spend as much time at disney.

3) The thought that someone would be offended that somoeone was smoking on a balcony near them is IMO silly...With the notable exception being those that have serious breathing issues, and accomadations should be made for these folks. We have come to the point now where just the aroma of a ciggarrette in the general area is now offensive....i agree that there should be a large number of non-smoking rooms, as the smell is most definetly an issue. However, this idea that your health is at risk (speaking of already healthy people of course) is selcetive reasoning at best, especially with all the other issues that go on every day that effect our health much more.

Surprisingly enough...I DONT SMOKE....and i also dont want to stay in a smoking room due to the smell. But I could care less if someone is smoking in the room next to me, or the balcony next to me, or in a designated area in a restaurant. or on the golf course. i certainly know it is not hazzardous to my health, at least not as much as the air i breath on the highway every day.

While I appreciate your thoughts, it is important to remember that they work for you....they do not work for everyone. And, because others have problems with concerns that you do not...it does not make them wrong or even silly.

I don't eat cheeseburgers, I find them disgusting (I like hamburgers...but, add the cheese, and yuck!!) But, someone eating a hamburger next to me, even at my table does nothing to endanger my health. I would not, however eat my hamburger near the tailpipe of an SUV....you are right...that danger is real as well. But, I would also not choose to eat my hamburger near a smoker...that is yucky, too!!!

And, my mom has SERIOUS health issues whenever she encounters smoke. Her throat and sinus cavities close up immediately. She has been taken to the hospital for treatment, and is left with a nasty infection (respiratory and sinus) just from sitting near a smoker. Her allergy is especially bad because it is what doctors have called an "acquired" allergy. My grandparents were both smokers, and my mom was constantly sick as a child (sinus and respiratory infections). She missed more school than she attended. Once she got married and moved away from home, her body cleared and her body now has ZERO tolerance for cigarette smoke. Her doctor said it is similar to what happens when you feed baby rats sugar laced with arsenic. They develop a reaction not only to the arsenic, but also to the sugar. When you then go back and feed these rats sugar when they are grown....they die. It is a "developed or acquired allergy".

All I know is that it is really scary, and we have to be on constant alert for smokers when we are with my mom. She has to avoid many types of places in her life...Disneyworld should not be one of them.

I am a non-smoker. Never have been, never will be. I don't mind people smoking around/near/in front of me, however, I do not like the smell of stale smoke after the fact (that is why my home & cars are smoke free).

Anyway, if the resorts were to go completely smoke free, I think it would just make matters worse. Then I think there would definitey be a bigger problem with smoking in the rooms. Smokers have rights too. Let's not totally alienate them. (Here in NJ, there is talk of banning smoking while driving. This is absolutely ridiculous).

DVC can solve this problem easily - make smoking/non smoking a guarantee, not a request. If the room of your choice is not available at the time you make your ressie, then at least you know what you are getting. Or you can choose to find another resort that meets your needs.

I'm done ranting now. Thanks for listening :goodvibes

The only places in Ontario that you can smoke are bard but oinly if they do not serve food and even that is being changed. You can smoke in your home and in your car but they are looking at changing that also I hope they do because I feel sorry for the kids couped up in a car with a parent or parents that smoke.

Partly true. Stand alone bars must prove less than 10% food sales to have smoking. They have to pay for an audit themselves every 2 years to prove it. Smoking is still permitted outside so many restaurants have added outside options or expanded the ones they already had.

This thread was inspired by the HA room thread and the early check in thread.

We will be arriving at SSR Thanksgiving night around 9:30PM. I've never checked in this late before. From what I have read here I will have little chance of getting any requests because of my late arrival and because the resort is probably sold out that day. I don't have a problem with getting a HA room or a not so great location. But I'm a little concerned about being stuck with a smoking room. I've never run into this situation before at WDW. We have stayed in smoking rooms two other times in other cities. The smell was awful. I felt like the smell followed me everywhere outside of the room. No one in my family has any allergies so I can't requset NS for medical reasons. But I was wondering, if I do end up with a smoking room (I assume there will be a smell) what does the resort do to get rid of the smell? And does it work?
I'm curious to hear any of your experiences.

Thanks.

I don't know if you will get a smoking room but you may get a smoking optional room like we did (and we arrived around noon at BCV--a smaller resort). Housekeeping was considerate and cleaned the rugs, etc. to make the room as nice as they could. Since I am allergic to fragrance, they did everything with just water otherwise I believe they use a cleaner that probably makes the room smell nice.
From other threads it sounds like there are smokers that WANT the smoking rooms so let's hope they receive them and you get your non-smoking one.
SSR isn't very old so I wouldn't think you will have a problem. Enjoy your trip.

I do not know if you DO need a medical reason to get a NS gurantee. When I requested a room the last 2 times we went and this next time this Nov. I told them we though cigarette smoke was replusive to us and we could not and would not stand for it. All three times the CM was very understanding and told us they would give us a NS room for medical reason. I did tell them we were not allergic to it but could not tolarate it. I guess this is enough for them. We have had NS each time and on our reservation she stated this would be listed a NS for medical reason. The conformation just shows it as a request but so far we have not had a smoking room...smjj

I would hate to see this become a practice or encouraged by this board because those who truly need the NS for medical reasons may not be able to get their smoke free room.

I just wish the DVC would go All Non-Smoking, then we wouldn't have to be worried about waking up nauseated in the middle of the night because all they had left were smoking rooms. Better to make certain balconies smoking or non-smoking so that at least smokers would have someplace to go. Plus it would likely reduce maintenence fees as cleaning expense would be lower.

Not gonna happen, but it's on my wish list.

Smoking optional rooms are just DVC’s latest euphemism for a smoking room. It just doesn’t sound quite as smoked in as a smoking room. What would a smoking room be? Smoking mandatory?

DVC: I’m sorry sir, the only room we have left is a smoking room.

Me: Do you mean smoking optional?

DVC: No sir, we have non-smoking, smoking optional, and smoking. This one is a smoking room.

Me: What does that mean?

DVC: If you accept he room, at least one member of your party must smoke in it.

Frankly, I believe ANYONE can honestly say they are requesting a non-smoking room FOR MEDICAL REASONS, diagnosed allergies or not...who hasn't read about the health risks of second hand smoke???
