For you older DISers -- what is wrong with my shoulder?

I'm asking the older crowd, because as we all know, when you turn 40, your body falls apart piece by piece.

My shoulder hurts when I move it. It hurts across the top (not the rotator cuff -- that much I know). It hurts more in cold weather. I think it's bursitis. What do you think it is? And what can I do for it until I see my doctor next Monday?

I just love these guessing games. Next it will be "Why can't I read small print anymore?"

I guess I might fit that 'older' category.:) It could be some arthritis, or, as you think, bursitis. Only thing I can think of, temporarily, is OTC pain reliever, like ibuprofen, aspirin or similar. Good luck on Monday.

As I hold on for dear life to my walker (hey! who oiled the wheels with WD40?! ), a agree with what Dan said.

;)

Hope it feels better.

You are describing my pain and in my case it's OsteoArthritis, BTW , I have had it for 14 years now and I'm only 39 ;) but I'm NOT OLD!!!!

older and achey here...
Is the pain in the joint or in the muscles of your shoulder and neck?
If it is a chronic pain.. not one caused by recent trauma/injury.

1. Moist hot pack for 20 min. several times per day is ok.... DO NOT SLEEP or leave hot pack on for more that 20 min per period as this causes blood to pool in the area.. causing increased stiffness and pain.

2. After Hot pack.. gingerly move your arm. Stand at kitchen counter, bend at waist, support yourself with uninjured arm on counter, let painful arm hang free (like it is heavy and loose) swing arm in circles..it should move freely and easily. move it 10x clockwise then 10x counterclockwise. This is the first step in Codman's shoulder exercises. Do not do this if it increases your pain.

3. You can try ice packs for 10-15 min. but most arthritic pts find this a bit painful.
4. Anti inflammatory meds will help too.

Hope you feel better right quick! btw.. got my first pair of bifocals btwn my 40th and 41st b-days.. happy birthday to me:rolleyes:

You might want to see a doctor. My husband had a painful shoulder and it turned out to be bursitis that required an intrarticular injection. That stopped the pain and it has not returned yet.

Well I know I'm old,LOL. Bi-focals at 36, trifocals in my forties, seeing eye dog next!!!! I agree with the others, if no injury, then probably need an anti-inflamitory. Seems like something is always hurting on me, LOL. Hope you feel better soon. I wonder if they have magnifing monitors?

Thanks all. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something completely horrible.

I spoke to my mom, who confirmed it is probably bursitis, and told be about that injection (OUCH!!!!!) Until Monday, it's heat and Advil.
