....And I know because I am one of them! I used the Google Earth measuring function to try and get a good grasp on how much walking we will do if we hop between parks. I am sure its give or take a few tenths of a mile but maybe it will help.

The gates of the two parks are approximately 300 feet apart.

From the furthest point in Mickey's Toon Town in DL to Radiator Springs Racers in DCA it is .8 of a mile.

A walk around World Showcase in Epcot is around 1.2 miles.

The ferry dock at MK in WDW and going to the Barnstormer (I don't know why you would do that but it appeared to be one of the further points in MK  ) is .55 miles

DHS to the creepy clown pool at BWV .7 miles

DHS to YC 1.1 miles

BTMR at MK to Space Mountain .48 miles

Some hotel info measuring from closet hotel room to DLR bag check (furthest rooms usually add about 300ft):
Park Vue Inn .24 miles
Best Western .21 miles
Tropicana .24 miles
Carousel .27 miles
Mariott .4 miles
HoJo .49 miles
Candy Cane Inn .48 mile

HTH!

As a frequent visitor to Disneyland, I can attest that the resort is so much smaller than WDW. You vets from over there will have no problems with the walks...

I've read several threads where people reported the number of steps they had taken per day (according to pedometer, fitbit, etc.) and I was surprised that the numbers reported were about the same for both DLR and WDW. I think it could be due to the fact that although the individual parks at DLR are smaller one often does a lot a lot walking in between destinations (park hopping, to DTD, to the hotels, down Harbor Blvd, etc.).

And backtracking for FP-!
I'm okay with that though. I'm totally fine with being the runner. I always figure I could use the extra calorie burning AND I get away from the family for a bit and can sightsee a little on my journey.

Google maps shows a walking distance of .8 miles between Minnie's House and Flo's V8. Anyone who has walked the path that Google displays can tell you that you will end of deviating considerably, especially when exiting one park and entering the other. I could easily see the actual route being a mile. Over the course of a day, all of the adjustments and non-direct routes will add up considerably.

Using both a phone app and a pedometer, we find we average 6.5 to 7.5 miles of walking per day. Using FP a lot causes us to walk on the higher side of those figures.

This is awesome! We are regulars at BC and resort hop to make the most of our walking opportunities to the parks - anything to avoid the busses with our double stroller - and reading on here I imagined such horrible walking distances. When I actually googled the walk from DLH ("the super far away hotel"), I giggled myself silly thinking how I'm going to have to watch my caloric intake since I won't be burning like at WDW walking 12-15 miles daily! I'll be lucky to get in 10 here!

when I calculated I used Google Earth and the "measure" function where you drop your little plot points. I used the aerial images to see what looked like the shortest path from whatever two points and actually clicked the little ruler along the entire "walk".

I don't know if that is how you calculated? I was really only looking for a ballpark. It's hard to wrap my mind around "6 minute walk" but if I can compare it to, say, the WS, it makes it more real to me.

Great information, thank you for posting. My DH and I each got Fitbits for Christmas and we cannot wait to see how many steps we will walk each day of our trip. In February, I went to WDW with a couple friends, I recorded 20,000+ steps each day, of course some days were a bit more then others depending on the park that we went to. I am going to compare those steps to when we are at DLR.

You can't assume that the shortest path will be clear or that you won't be forced a certain way by crowd control. When entering and exiting parks not all turnstiles are open. When exiting it's usually 2-3, and only on 1 side. Even with very low and no line to enter you can't cover that distance in 6 minutes without bumping into other guests.

I didn't say it was a six minute walk from anywhere specifically. More that simply having actual distances help me visualize better than someone saying that point A to point B takes X minutes. Those of us who know WDW like the back of our hand have a hard time visualizing just how compact the California parks are.

I really didn't expect this to be the end all be all. Like I said, "ballpark".

I agree that DLR is much more compact and walkable than WDW for sure, especially when it comes to hotel distance and parkhopping. But you can still pack in a lot of steps. We basically walked half-marathons (13 miles) on back-to-back days last summer, without parkhopping!! But that was two crazy commando DL veterans and two teen girls who went from 7 a.m. EMH to closing the parks late.

I visited both in one trip in December, and found I walked more at Disneyland. At WDW The fastpass plus meant I didn't need to walk as much, plus the buses take you everywhere.

Our trip is coming up in about a month to DL. It will be interesting to see where we walk more. We never use WDW buses and always rent a car. Typically we walk from the parking lot vs using the tram (unless we get stuck in a way far lot). That really adds some steps.

I am planning on being the FP runner in DL so hopefully my "taking one for the team" will save my DH and DD's some energy. I am the biggest Disney fan with the best tolerance for walking and being in the park until close. I will willingly be the sacrificial lamb if it means I can keep the family happy and in the park a few more hours. :teeth:
