I know there are many tightwads like myself who frequent this board and often tips such as this one are shared here.
Many room air fresheners, both plug in and table-top types, have a wick of sorts in them. After the scented liquid used up I yank the wicks out and put them into the kettle of water that I always have going on my wood-burning stove.
It's fragrance permeates the house as if I had a candle burning! In the absence of a wood stove you could use a small sauce pan on the range top or a potpourri warming unit.
