This is on CNN today --- basically an article about what happens to all the contriband found while going thru security at various airports...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/09/21/tsa.contraband.sale/index.html

"The division picks up leftover booty from Orlando International Airport in Florida. Disney World's home airport yields plenty of fake pirate swords, and the TSA does not allow replica weapons, or even decorative belt buckles shaped like guns or plastic toys, to go aboard. Bailey said the swords are donated to nonprofits working with underprivileged children."

I can't imagine any level of harm a plastic sword could do, but they must be in checked luggage nonetheless! pirate:

What's ridiculous is that the site says "realistic replica".....they aren't even following their OWN words, if they are taking those things.

Makes me so happy witht eh kind TSA agent at LAX who let us get on with a HUGE plastic sword (from BBB in DL with their Knight's package) and a big white (with black scorch marks) Stormtrooper Blaster (or rebel alliance something or other). She was really really really really nice.

We were going to pack the blaster in our luggage, and in fact would have gotten out of line to check it if they said "no", but the housekeeping person on the day of our last night threw out the box for the blaster...we have soft-sided luggage and NEEDED that box, and I can't believe she did that... Anyway, we took a risk and won.

Because there's no such thing as an actual stormtrooper blaster, there's no such thing as a realistic replica of one... And some see-through pink Pirates musket isn't realistic either, and a plastic sword isn't realistic as well!

Ridiculous.

Agreed on the ridiculousness. If they truly are confiscating the swords like they sell outside the POTC, then they need to take another peek at the TSA rules and back off on the grinchin'. And perhaps go to a renaisannce festival to see what real swords look like. ;)
