if it was found that not having kids would add an extra 10-15 years of life expectancy, would that play any part in your decision to have or not have children?

I suspect that most of your answers from the people you're asking (ie those without kids) are going to be pretty predictable.

You might get a different set of answers from those with kids, and those will also probably be pretty predictable.

I'm recently married without kids and I would still have children even if this information surfaced. :)

Wow......

Talk about 'stirring the pot' (I don't see that smiley icon)

TROLL ALERT!!!!!!

Anyhow, regardless if one has kids or not, to make a decision of this magnitude based on adding to one's own life expectancy would be the absolute height of self absorption and narcissism.

What an oddball thing to ask--particularly for someone who just joined the DIS:confused3 but interesting nonetheless.

I have kids so I am not who you are looking for to answer--but I would have had kids anyway. Honestly, raising 2 kids probably means 10-15 years of my life are spent doing things that are not always my first choice because of them (extra laundry or cleaning, driving to school or lessons, up in the middle of the night with crying babies or sick kids, etc. etc.)--but I would not change it for the world.
The people I know who have chosen not to have kids will not be having them even without such a finding;)

I don't agree with this. There's nothing wrong, in my opinion, with someone choosing NOT to have kids if they could live longer. We're all different, and people have different ideas of how they want to live their lives.

Since I already have kids, I'd choose to still have them if my life were cut 10-15 years. I can't imagine my life without them, they add so much, so a shorter life would be a small price to pay.

When I was a teenager (before kids), I'd probably have said I'll pass on the kids to have a longer life.

This is an interesting question.

We don't have kids because we couldn't.

As long as my life expectancy could reasonably keep me alive long enough to see the kids grown, I'd have still had them if I could have.

So for example, if I would have lived to age 85 but if I have kids I would die at age 75, I'd have still had kids because chances are, if I had kids prior to the age of 45 (which is the "usual" childbearing age), the kids would be 30 and into adulthood when I died.

And yes, I know that sometimes parents die younger and the kids turn out all right and such. This is my opinion only.

I do have kids, so I'm not the target audience here, but I think a lot would depend on one's starting point.

Women in my family routinely live well into their 90s, so giving up 10-15 years for the joys of having children seems a small price to pay. My husband, on the other hand? Men in his family are doing well if they make it to retirement age, with most dying in their early-mid 60s. He'd most likely have chosen not to have children if they shortened his life span because of the high chance that would mean he wouldn't live long enough to raise them to adulthood.

I guess if we are talking about someone who has a health problem where physically giving birth could shorten their life expectancy that is one topic.

If we are just talking in general about childrens existence mystically shortening your life, that is another.

What's the back story?

Definitely not. Making it to 95+ doesn't sound too exciting, especially when you don't have descendants to wipe your butt for you.

Wow...

So, according to you, loving life and wanting to live it as long as possible even if meant not having children would be the height of self absorption and narcissism?

I don't get this, I really don't :sad2:

I would still want to have children just as much as want them now. Doesn't matter if my life would be shortened or not by them.

I don’t have kids and who knows if I will. However, I can guarantee you that added life expectancy will not be one of the defining reasons for or against my having children.

Funny, there was another Hawks fan that was recently banned for stirring the pot. Me thinks they might be twins :rolleyes1

It wouldn't be a deciding factor, just another thing to add to my already long imaginary list of "why I don't want kids". As far as I'm concerned, I made the decision ages ago and that was obviously not a factor.

I have children, but I don't get your question.

So, are you asking those who've decided not to have children if they would change their minds if it meant they would die 10 to 15 years earlier if they had them?

:confused3
