I am trying to plan an overnight surprise for my DH and was looking for thoughts on these 2 hotels. We would not be seeing a show, just a few touristy things and window shopping.

Also, the rooms...looking online I have found

Marriott Marquis - Concierge Level $289.00
The Plaza - Deluxe King $309.00 or Fairmont King $279.00

I know its a lot for 1 night, but I think it would be fun, and something we kind of need right now.

Thank you:)

The Plaza over the Marriot any day.

I've only stayed at the Marquis, which is really not a bad hotel, but The Plaza is in a much better location, in my opinion. Either way, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

The Plaza is far nicer and a better location than the Marriott. It is a grand dame type hotel. Very ritzy. It looks out over Central Park. On the otherhand, the Marriott Marquis in Times Square is very clean and nice. It is small and upscale. It is certainly newer than the Plaza. The service is great and the location is right smack in the middle of Times Square. The restaurant looks out over Times Square with a view that is amazing. For the prices shown I would choose the Plaza if a room were available. As a second plan the Marriott is no slouch at all. The Plaza just has that much over the Marriott in history and reputation as well as beauty. You would REALLY enjoy either.

We just stayed at the Marriott over Memorial Day weekend. Nice place, but the wait for elevators was ridiculous, and they screwed up our room request. Still, it's in a nice location if you're into the theater and all the hubbub of Times Square.

Funny story about the Plaza and the other "Ritzy" hotels right around it. There is a bit of an overwhelming odor immediately outside the doors of these rather swankified hotels ;) See, the handsome cabs that tour central park are stationed right across the street (literally) from the front door of the Plaza. So, in other words, when you walk out of this highly expensive hotel, the first thing you are absolutely FORCED to notice is the overwhelming stench of...um....horse manure :)

I agree both hotels are a good choice. I would pick the Plaza, esp since they are comparable in cost.

The Plaza is a great place to stay. Many of the rooms have an "interior" view. If you want a view of the city or the park be sure that's what you book.

The Marriot is nice too. I also like the Crown Plaza in Times Square.

{sigh} I love NY.

Ooooooo The Plaza, definitely!

I grew up about 1 1/2 hours from NYC and we once spent a long weekend at The Plaza during Christmastime (and there's no place like NYC at Christmastime)! Do look into booking a city or park view as Sirius said--you won't regret a stay at The Plaza! Have fun!:)

I don't think you can go wrong with either hotel.

I've stayed at the Marriott. It's very nice.

If I had the choice between the two, I'd choose the Plaza.

I have actually stayed at both hotels. If you are not going to the theater, I would stay at the Plaza. I like the convenience of staying in Times Square because we go to the theater every night of our stay and getting a cab after the theater can be a hassle, especially in the rain! Have a great time. By the way, don't waste your money on the afternoon tea at the Plaza. If you really want to have tea, the St. Regis has a better one.

I give a big thumbs down to the Marquis! The lines for elevators are horrible and the restaurants in the hotel were never open. Plus, we were on the 34th floor!:faint:

Have a great trip whatever you choose!:sunny:

Thank you all for the replies. Looks like The Plaza is the way to go. It is something we have talked about treating ourselves to and I think the only way we will do it, is if I just surprise him with it.

I highly highly doubt that we would be able to afford a park view room, so it looks like I would go with the Deluxe King for the Fairmont King room. I am hoping either will be nice.

dvcfamily41801,
Last year I told my DH to meet me in the Oak Bar at The Plaza to have a birthday drink before going home to our DD. But, I had really arranged for a sitter, booked us a dinner reservation at Jean Georges followed by a night stay at The Plaza. (As New Yorkers, we'd never stayed there). During check in, I mentioned my surprise plans to the desk clerk and he got so excited, he instantly upgraded me from a standard deluxe room to a Fairmont Room with one of the best park views (a $500 room for which I paid $200). It was unbelievable - My DH was completely floored! So mention it's a surprise gift for your DH when you check in - you never know.
