For those who have done one-way car rentals ending at the port

I'm noticing that the fine print on multiple rental booking sites says that locations may collect additional one-way fees upon rental return (above and beyond what the reservation amount is). Has anybody had experience with this? Was it $0? $20? $200? I checked the websites of the Budget and Enterprise locations, and couldn't find anything. I emailed them (paper trail!), but wanted to check in w/the experts here.

It's pretty hard to do a transportation cost analysis when there's an alluded-to-but-undefined extra charge possibility!

Can anybody please share insight/experience?

Thanks!

Yes, it's good to be aware of any potential one-way fees. But, I've done 6 one-way rentals between MCO & Port Canaveral (with Hertz, Avis, and National) and I've never had a one-way fee.

Thank you! That makes me feel so much better!

By the way, I just received this note from Enterprise: "You can rest assured there is no drop fee billed for this rental, nor will one be billed at pick up. Just as long as the rental remains the same, so will the price. You are all good to go!"

The major rental agencies don't do dropoff charges within Florida. Make sure you check for rental discounts through organizations or your company. You may or may not be able to use these through the booking agencies. With my corporate retiree discount it is cheaper for me to do one-way Avis rentals to and from our airport than parking at the airport for any trip more than three days.

If the rental agency charges a drop charge it'll be included in the advertised charges provided that you actually make the reservation as a one-way reservation. That note is really there for people that make a roundtrip reservation and then decide to drop it off somewhere else.

We have done this many times, picking up at Enterprise MCO, and dropping off at Port Canaveral. The one way charge is always presented up front in the breakdown of the price, usually noted as a "drop fee". If you want to compare, try searching the same length of time rental, but returning to the same location you picked up at. Its never been more than $25 or so for me, but i think it varies based on location and demand. With MCO/Port Canaveral, there is strong demand at both locations so its not a big deal. If i search my local Enterprise location here in California, and say LAX airport which is 75 miles away, i have seen drop fees up to $150 quoted.

Port Canaveral they're pretty cool about it. Galveston, not so much. They charge $150 to drop cars there. We dropped ours off a couple of years ago about 15 miles up the highway then Ubered to the port for ~$30.

We have done one way rentals from MCO to PC from National. It’s very convenient to have a car to go to dinner and get last minute cruise supplies. In the morning I drop off the family and bags at the port, return the car, and take the shuttle back to the port. You can see the cruise ship from the rental location. I think Avis and Hertz are nearby too. We haven’t had to pay an extra fee for a one way rental from MCO
