LOL, Silent. I agree with you on many points. I remember how it used to be, too.
My phones have never even had the ability to text so we're talking up to now it's been *very basic* phones for me. Yet their functioning was tedious so I only used them for calls.
The iPhone is very cool and super easy to operate. I gave it a lot of thought and am sure it will not only simplify my life but actually save me money on other things.
For instance, I'll no longer have to write down people's email addresses and phone numbers on random scraps of paper (only to lose them and find the long after I need them). I can simply, right then and there and very easily, add them into my iPhone. How to dress myself and kids for weather? No longer have to try to catch the news, find the Weather Channel or search the internet - I just click the Weather icon on my iPhone and within a few seconds I can see what it will be like for the whole week ahead. I bought my DH a GPS for XMas last year - he'll probably sell it now as he no longer needs it, he can get directions right on his iPhone. Can't find a calculator at work? Just pull out my iPhone. Need to write something down and don't have a piece of paper handy? Write it in the Notebook. Don't want to carry the hefty S3 around for occasional pictures? Pull out the iPhone for camera and video capability. To replace or not replace the broken Netbook I use to upload my pictures into on vacation? Guess I don't need to now as I can upload them to my iPhone. Want to listen to some music while I'm stuck in line somewhere or even

watch my favorite movie? Just pull out my iPhone and enjoy. (I have never had an iPod, really behind the times I guess, lol.) Can't get ahold of my DH during the day?

Just send him a text. I could go on, but you get the idea. Sure, it's technology we might not "need", but in today's day and age it's sure nice to have it, and yes, I'm willing to pay the price for it just like I do other things that simplify my life and I enjoy.
It kind of reminds me of when home computers first came out. A lot of people didn't want to bother with one (and still don't) or pay the costs associated with internet use, etc. But in today's world they've become the norm and one would wonder why anyone didn't want one. I suppose there were some who thought the same way about the automobile when it first came out, I dunno.
