For those who do laundry on vacation...

how do you pack your detergent? For our September trip, we'll be flying, and I would pack our detergent with the other tolietries we'll be checking. Obviously I want to put it in something big enough that I can do a couple of loads of laundry, but I don't want to take a huge amount either.

Any suggestions? TIA!:goodvibes

I put premeasured amounts of dry detergent in ziptop baggies, then I place the baggies inside a larger freezer ziptop bag.

I also send for detergent freebies throughout the year to save for vacations. This year I did the same for dishwasher detergent, since we're staying DVC for most of our trip.

I bought little travel size bottles and just poured our liquid detergent in those. TSA told me that laundry soap in checked luggage is a no no? I brought it anyways:confused3 .

Yes, I too do laundry while on vacation. Usually, I take a clean empty shampoo bottle (or something of a similar size) and fill it with liquid laundry soap and put it in a large zip lock bag. I pack it with my other laundry supplies in a separate cosmetic type bag along with dryer sheets (which I also put in a small zip lock bag). I put all liquids into large zip lock bags (just in case something leaks) and then put them into one piece of luggage (and hope it doesn't go over the weight limit for the airline) and we are all set. Enjoy your trip!

Doh!:headache: I knew someone would have an easy solution I just didn't think of! I would never think to save an empty shampoo bottle, but that is a great idea. This way I can take our normal liquid detergent in a easy to use bottle.:thumbsup2

I've never used the dry, but that's a great idea for those who do.

I've sent for some too, but the problem with my family is that we have lots of allergies. So we use the dye-free, fragrance-free detergent. And so far all my freebies have been scented. Which means I'm going to have to freely give them away to someone else.:lmao:

Really? I'll have to check the TSA website and see what it says.

I purchase the small 6-10 use bottles of detergent and Downy (I hate dryer sheets). I roll the bottles in beach towels and toss them into our checked luggage.

When we fly, I ship all of these types of things to the resort ahead of our arrival. I pack the detergent, softener, dish soap, shampoos, conditioners, shaving cream, rain ponchos, first aid kit, etc. etc. Anything non perishible goes into the box. It has worked great because I use a heavy duty plastic box and am able to send my souvenirs home safely in the same box. The cost is a consideration but it is worth it for us. Have a great trip!

I went down to the laundromat, as per this site, and bought 4 boxes at 50cents apiece. For 2 bucks, I had twice what we needed..

How long does a load of laundry take in the DW resort machines? Do you hang around in the laundry room or do you leave and come back?

We ordered ours through gardengrocer.com with our other baby and food items. We did not use it and it is still in my laundry room at home, so I plan to bring it this time, unless we order gardengrocer again. It is a 4 load bottle. It was reasonable too:)

for our first trip, as a "just in case" I packed a small 8oz water bottle filled with liquid detergent. I shipped it down ahead of time with snacks and such. We used Magic Express and did not have access to a grocery store.

All small & Mighty free/clear - the 8oz bottle held enough for 4 loads.

This time, we stayed at OKW in a 1BR and had a rental car, I bought a bottle of detergent on a grocery run. I did several loads of laundry and felt the convenience of buying it in Florida was worth the waste of throwing 1/2 a bottle away.

I don't remember exactly how long it took, but at most places the laundry rooms are near the pools. I did mine last August while the kids swam. (This was at one of the quiet pools at POR). There are no life guards at the quiet pools at POR so I did have DD "help" me each time I had to go into the laundry room just to be safe.

I found individual packets of Tide at Walmart for $1 in the sample section. Worked perfectly! It was pre-measured so it was just tear it open and dump it in. I spent a little more than I could have doing something different but I didn't have to worry about it spilling or anything. I figured $3 was worth the convenience! I used 2 and have one put aside in the "Disney box" with stuff like lanyards and autograph books so I know where it is for the next trip. For fabric softner I just brought some dryer sheets.

they did have detergent in little 4-6 load bottles in the resort shops or individual packets in a machine in the laundry room.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas!

Now I'm debating whether or not to pack some or do a grocery run when we get there. We're using a towncar service, so it won't be an issue. Either way, you've all give me some food for thought.

I found ALL detergent travel size at Target in travel/toiletries aisle. They are 2oz "small & mighty" bottles that will do 2 loads per bottle. To be eco-friendly, they are easily refillable with ALL 3xconcentrated SMALL & Mighty for future use. Whenever possible, i like to keep things in their appropriate container so there's no question of contents but also don't want alot of throwaway packaging.

I use to use the tide tablet but I haven't been able to find them in years. I currently have an Oxy ball. I bought it a couple of vacations ago, ie years ago and I still have most of the ball left. I don't have to worry about spills with these products because with my luck something always spill. Uhm isn't that why I'm doing laundry on vacation? :rotfl2: Anyway I also grab a couple of dryer sheets.

Our stores (Target, Kmart, Walmart, etc.) have both ALL and Tide detergent in travel size. I just put one in a ziplock in case of leakage and put a couple of fabric softner sheets in another ziplock...takes up zero room and much cheaper than the vending machines in the laundry room.

I always fill an empty 20oz Coke bottle with Tide! I pack it in with the toiletries. That way I don't have to run out and buy anything new and just give away what you don't use to another guest.

I don't use the dry stuff either but for vacation I do.

I like a few others pre measure it & put it in a zip lock bag. This way I just have to dump it & toss it.

I also ship it ahead of time with my box of goodies (diapers-OK not really a goodie!, snacks, etc..

One year I tried the liquid & I premeasured it since I didn't think to buy the smaller containers or maybe they didn't have those super small travel sized ones back then. Any ways, I premeasured the liquid, double bagged each premeasured bag & then put it in yet another bag & it still seeped out but into the larger zip lock bag.

Since then I just do powder for vacation.
