For those of you that take your sound machines with you when traveling to the world, do you take them in your carry on bags or do you have to check them with the rest of your baggage?

I'm worried that it will get broken if I can't carry it on. Thanks!

I downloaded a free app on my phone and now only use that. Saves packing room ;)

We always pack it in our checked luggage. However the one time I packed it in my carry-on, it got flagged at xray, they called me aside, took it out and questioned me on what it was and tried taking it apart to check it. (it doesn't come apart). They let it go through, but it was quite a hassle, surprisingly.

I've got a couple of apps but DH says it's just not the same. Maybe I'll have to have him give them a try again. I don't really want the hassle. Or maybe I'll use the App for DS2 & request a box fan for DH. That might be the easiest option.

I read somewhere to put the phone in a glass to amplify the sound, but haven't tried it yet.

I'm a confirmed box fan girl but obviously not always possible. I have used he ap and just put The phone right by my head. It worked ok.

We drive since we are in Fl. But when we fly other places I've but it in my check suitcase.

We always take a sound machine with us and have always packed it in my DD's checked bag without issue. I would think the wrong TSA officer could make it a security hassle as a PP mentioned. The App may be fine in a pinch (as are bathroom fans and radio static), but for us we don't want to risk the much needed sleep for DD while there with anything but the real deal.:thumbsup2

FWIW, I've had a hassle at the xray machine because of my non-Apple MP3 player. That doesn't mean I'm going to make my own fuss about it and not bring it.

We should never be hurrying through security anyway, we should add in time just in case something looks funky in our bag. Heck, before the whole battery thing was mentioned in the TSA rules, I had a simple pack of batteries in an unopened box labeled batteries questioned. The bag was run through the scanner multiple times before they asked me if they could open it (after I'd said "it's batteries, it's on the end, please just open it" more than twice). That doesn't mean I don't bring batteries.

It's perfectly fine on the plane. If DH needs it, he needs it. You don't want it broken. I know I don't want a cellphone on in my room all night to run an app. Make sure you're not rushing, pack "politely" (not a bunch of stuff crammed all over other stuff), and carry it on. No biggie.

I totally agree. its not at all the same. I have a couple of apps and theyre ok. But again, not the same as a machine.

The phone in a glass works great actually! I do that at work. I never thought to do this on vacation thou! :p I'll have to try it next time.

I put mine in checked luggage but in a big plastic ziploc in case luggage gets wet. It's been to Disney many times, on two cruise ships w/flights, and even to Mexico. Never have I been asked to take it out and have never been questioned. I think I carried it on once and it went right through security fine, but it weighted down my backpack, so have been checking it ever since.
