For those that sew and quilt

I have decided to invest in a sewing machine and was wondering what type of things you guys make?

I have a sewing machine but mainly use it for making fancy dress costumes for school etc. and the odd items for my scrapbook pages. It is a useful item to have if you like doing crafts and the like! Mine was quite cheap as I know I wouldn't use the fancy options on expensive ones - far too complicated for me

My machine is quite simple, I dobn't do complicated either! So far I have managed to hem DS school shorts and make a scottie dog pillow for my DD!

I've got a sewing machine and I mainly use it for making things for the house, all of our curtains etc I made, I also cross stitch so I use my machine for making cushion covers to attach my stitching to, I also use it for adjusting clothes and stuff.

I think it's great to be able to use a sewing machine, I certainly love mine!

I've got one too and love it.

I have used it to make my daughters some bridesmaid outfits, dressing up costumes including an Alice in Wonderland outfit and for general repairs on clothes - I hate throwing things out if there is something I can fix. I have made curtains and cushion covers in the past too

I am planning to make some bags to ebay and have all the stuff to do it - just I haven't found the time to start yet Not enough hours in the day

My mum recently gave me her old machine and it's lovely being able to make things with it. So far, I've made a fabric advent calendar, a patchwork cushion, some cushion bases for my crocheted covers to go over (I'm crocheting some liquorice allsort cushions), plus I've altered and mended a few bits and pieces. The last time I properly used a sewing machine was when I was at school!

I've collected lots of lovely fabrics. I bought loads on holiday in Florida last year in Joanns and Walmart. It's generally a lot cheaper than here, even with a poor exchange rate. I especially loved rummaging in Walmart's offcuts bin!

I've made clothes, curtains and shopping bags. I tend to do crafts in fits and starts at the moment I'm into knitting and crochet, before that it was scrapbooking, cardmaking and cross stitich.

I find I sew more during the summer (I work in a school) as I can't be bothered to get the machine and the iron out and set them up just for a day or two - oh and we can eat outside in the summer so I have the dining table to sew on.

I am just learning so experimenting on scraps etc, I would love to cross stitch but always wondered what to do with the end result, cushions are a great idea!

Theresa, the last time I used one was at school too! I will have a look next time I am in Walmart, I love getting a bargin!

It can take up a lot of space! I would love to make a fish extender for our upcoming cruise!

My DD starts Reception in September and I went to John Lewis yesterday to get some gingham to make her a PE bag, it was only £1.20 for half a metre as it has a fault in it (apparently but I couldn't see anything wrong with it!)

I also love to buy the offcuts from JL, you can always get some great bargains!

Jockey - I also quilt my cross stitching with some wadding and then make panels out of it, I am currently compiling the Disney Princesses and plan on making a throw for DD's bed eventually - as you can imagine it's rather time consuming. Especially as I am also stitching the Golden Gate Bridge at the moment (just finished the Statue of Liberty!)

I am so pleased to hear this. I work in a year 1 class and the local uniform supplier sells school PE bags that are all identical - they are not compulsorary but most children seem to have them. When my kids misplaced their PE bags (15 years ago!!!) it was easy to spot in a cloakroom of homedade bags now if a bag gets put on the wrong peg it takes ages to track down amongst the identical green bags.

Libby, when we went to the Reception open evening on Tuesday night the bags were all identical! It's bad enough trying to customise their book bags so that they are identifiable, let alone a PE bag!! I think DD will love it!
