Hi,

We are traveling to SS at the end of January. :yay: We will have three adults and two kids. We have decided to cook in our room, partly because we want to save the $, and also because the DDP seems to be too much food for us. Now that you have to pay gratuity, it just does not seem like that great of a deal (for us).

Anyway; I need some meal: breakfast/lunch/dinner ideas. Do you have any you are willing to share? Is there a thread already on this topic? Search never seems to work for me.

Also is there a list out there of what the kitchen has available and what things you should bring?:dance3:
Thanks!

Are you bringing a crockpot? There are a lot of things you could do with one--for example:

Throw in a chuck roast and a jar of pepperoncinni's(juice and all)....cook on low all day and serve on sub buns with provolone cheese

Throw in some chicken breasts with a jar of salsa, cook on low all day and serve with taco fixin's.

Turkey breast with a package of dry onion soup mix sprinkled over the top and cooked on low all day....

That's just a few things that can be cooked in a crockpot(having said that, I've never brought mine, but I'm not beyond it if we drive again.....). I use a crockpot a lot during the week. It's so nice to come home at the end of the day and smell it all ready for us!

For breakfast we like to get stuff we don't normally eat at home. We don't take the time to cook a full out breakfast but donuts and cinnamon rolls are not the norm here, so we indulge on vacation(I've been known to eat the rest of my dessert from the night before for breakfast too)!

Breakfast: (kids love some of this for dinner sometimes, too)
* Eggs, sausage, canadian bacon
* Hot Cereal
* Pancakes

Lunch and/or Dinner:
* Spaghetti (always an easy one!)
* Burgers, hotdogs and/or Steaks on the grill
* Sloppy Joes
* Tacos (fast and easy!)
* Grilled sandwiches (cheese, ham/cheese) and soup
* Fish sticks or chicken tenders (okay...I know...not the healthiest!)
* Frozen pizzas
* Pot Roast (crock pot - http://www.familycrockpotrecipes.com/DeliciousCrockpotRecipesForTheFamily.html)
* Johnny Marzetti (closest to our recipe - http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1826,158169-230204,00.html). We don't use mushrooms or peppers, and add a can of tomato sauce, and Velveta block cheese to ours. Salt/pepper to taste, and bake for 1 hour. We find we like to use fusilli pasta (the spiral type) as well.

We stayed in a 2 bdrm/studio this summer for 8 days with 10 people.

Breakfast
Cereal, toast, eggs, fruit (one morning everyone wanted Mickey waffles at Artist's Palette)

Lunch
Sandwich fixings, salad fixings, pasta salad

Dinner
Bought 4 roasted chickens, 2 for dinner one night, sliced with veges and potatoes, then another night made chicken salad

Spaghetti
Fajitas
pizza

We had fruits and veges at all times. With 10 people, we knew which nights we were eating in and took turns cooking. If you didn't make it back in time for dinner, you ate leftovers or anything left in the frig.

We just came back from 7 nights in a 2 bedroom with 6 of us and knew that to do a Christmas trip, we needed to save on food. So my husband and I drove to Publix and spent $257.00 for the week. We bought breakfast food, lunches and dinners. We actually brought some things back home with us. We had more than enough for all meals, snacks and drinks. I think we were both amazed! :) We had baked chicken breast & sweet potato fries one night, one night we had steak & pasta, another night bbq spare ribs - we had some nice meals - and even ice cream for dessert! Now by comparison, we decided we'd splurge one meal in the park and ate at 50's Prime Time Cafe for lunch and spent $144.00 w/ tip for 6 people!!! Eating in if you're trying to save money is a no brainer!

This morning for breakfast I am cooking a sausage braid that is yummy! I got the recipe here on the dis and we had it for Christmas morning and everyone wanted it for New Years morning. Let me know if you are interested and I will post it.:)

We did quite a bit more eating in this past summer than before and actually enjoyed it.

A trip to Publix with the girls and we were set for the 10 days!!

Bagels, Oatmeal and cereal for breakfast.

Sandwiches (ham, cheese, roast beef) and salad for lunch.

Pasta for dinner. Roasted chicken, baked potatoes, salad, burgers, hot dogs.

Munchies all day..........loads of fruit, veggies and dips, granola bars, chips and plenty of water bottles.

We saved so much money by not eating out!!!

we purchase ground beef when we arrive and brown it all... Then I make spaghetti with meat sauce, tacos, tostadas, hamburger helper etc. Lots of meals with ground beef. The lettuce and cheese and tomatoes can be used for lots of meals too......

I cook simple but healthy meals for dinner most nights we are there. We eat breakfast in the room too (or one the busses to the parks) Coffee, toast, bagles with cream cheese, oatmeal etc.

Lunch is always done in the parks becasue we don't want to take the time to come back for lunch AND dinner...

We fly in so I have never done a crock pot but have read that many people purchase a crock pot and then leave it in the room after..... I am thinking of bringing my George Foreman grill the next trip - can pack that easily in the checked luggage.
