For Those of You Who Listen to Music While Running

Hi everyone! I'm relatively new to the running world (doing my first 5K in October, planning on the Family Fun 5K and possibly the Half Marathon in Disney in January 2015) so I have a question for you all. For the time being I want to use my iPhone for music while running to get myself motivated but 1) I don't know what to do with my iPhone while running and 2) I have no idea how to keep my earbuds in my ears or my headphones on my head (they don't even stay in or on while I'm sitting still, it's beyond annoying) while running. Do you all have any suggestions? What do you all use for workout music? Thanks so much! :)

Most of the time I use a SPIbelt, but for long runs, i have been using a WDW 2013 waist pack. It holds my phone, camera, and a snack with room to spare! I too have trouble with earbuds. Yurbuds are the only thing that works for me. They are specially designed for small ears, which is usually the reason earbuds fall out.

I use an armband for my phone. Right now it's a Lifeproof armband since that's the case my phone is in.

As for headphones, Yurbuds are the only bud style headphones that stay in my ears. I've also used some that go over the ear and around it.

I have an armband for my iPhone, bought it on eBay.

For everyday runs I just play my music on the speakers. I find it easier to hear traffic and be in tune with my body without buds.

For races I do use Jabra sport Bluetooth headphone buds. I have never been able to get any sort of headphone to work or feel comfortable while running, so I have some 3m plastic medical tape and tape them to my ears. Hey, whatever works! :lmao:

Ditto on the yurbuds. I found a pair at Best Buy a week or two ago that was on sale for $13; most of them run around $30 so that was an exciting day. But they do a great job staying in your ears, and I usually have quite a bit of trouble with that.

I have the clip-on iPod, but when I run with my nano I use an armband. I also have a flipbelt (very similar type item to a SPIbelt) and that works too - that's more of a preference thing depending on where your headphones cable is while you run and how much it annoys you.

For an iPhone you may be more comfortable carrying it in a belt than an armband, since it's bigger/bulkier, and since you will want to be able to look at it to change songs, etc., having it accessible instead of facing away from you on your arm might be better. But that's up to you!

Welcome to the running world... it's certainly hard to leave once you're here. :)

OH and when I use the belt, I will run the headphone cable up my shirt to keep it from tangling, etc. That helps a lot.

I use a spibelt too, since I keep my house or car key in there as well. As for headphones, I have used all types and have yurbuds right now - they worked very well....until yesterday, no matter how many times I "twist and locked" in my ear, they kept falling out. :confused3 I have another pair that I bought at Marshalls for $5, comes with a plastic loop (best way to describe it) that fits in the ear and it also stayed in place - I gave those to my son when I received the yurbuds from a giveaway I won.

Thanks for the responses everyone! :goodvibes

I was at Target today and actually saw Yurbuds without realizing that would be the most recommended thing on here! I was a bit put off by the price though, especially since I didn't know if they would really be worth it. Looks like I might be making a return trip to Target soon!

Sometimes I have to play with the angle a little, and then they fit again!

Another vote for Yurbuds. I have used them with my iPhone (in an armband) and with an iPod nano (clipped to by waistband), and they work pretty well. I've also been using a Jaybird Freedom Bluetooth headset that stays put really well, but is pricey and has a rated battery life of 4.5 hours, which I am probably going to overshoot for marathon and marathon-training distances.

I use a spy belt to hold my phone, run my earbuds up the back of my shirt and around the back of my neck and use earbuds with hooks. The brand I have is JVC, I think I got them at Target.

Hi there!
For earbuds, I have a pair of skullcandy that I love. The cord's a bit long, but I knotted it up and it works great.
My iphone, I hate to carry it but sometimes it's neccessary (I have a small nano that clips that I usually run with regardless). There are a variety of armbands and waistpacks out there, my best advice is go to a running store/ sports type place and try out various kinds. I bought a cheap armband at Target that promised to hold my key (it doesn't) and it barely fits over my arm and straps on the way I like (I'm not THAT big LOL).

I use the hook-over-the-ear earphone style, as I cannot get earbuds to reliably stay in. I also cut off one of the earphones and set my iPhone to mono sound, so I have one ear free to monitor traffic, cyclists, other runners, etc. I only use an unmodified two-ear set on the track or the treadmill.

I carry my iPhone in a Tune Belt neoprene waist pack. The stretchy neoprene makes the fit quite comfortable.

After so many people have recommended them, I may try Yurbuds...but I hate paying that much and then cutting one off :confused3. So maybe I'll just stick with the cheapies...;)

I have skull candy earbuds and changed the ear piece to the smallest size, and they work pretty well. I carry my iPhone in an armband, and will often thread the cord through my bra and sleeve since its so long. As for music I listen to a playlist on sotify.

+1 for the skull candy buds. DD got them for me at Target for $10 or $15. When running on roads, I keep only one in so I can hear road/ambient/surrounding noise with the other ear. I slip the earbud not in use the other under my bra strap to keep it from flopping around.

If I'm on a long run, I slip the earbud cord through my headband before putting it in my ear. I also do the same when I'm doing heavy duty cleaning around the house.

I run with my iphone in my amphipod waistpack - similar to a spibelt. (This one: http://www.amphipod.com/products/holders/day-of-race/airflow-microstretch-belt) I carry my phone in a snack sized ziplock baggie, so back sweat doesn't seep into it. Phone is carried for emergency purposes, as is my epi-pen.

I listen to music from my ipod nano that I keep clipped to the belt of the waistpack. I clip it on the side of my hip, with the cord pointing backwards. Not had a problem with this yet.

I eventually got so sick of dealing with the cord from my headphones, i dropped extra money to get a stereo bluetooth set just to eliminate that hassle.

I used to hold my phone in my hand, but I hated it, so I bought an armband (yurbuds iron man series I believe) and I've done away with the headphones that came with my iPhone. That being the case, I've reverted back to what I'll call my 90s headphones. :lmao: Needless to say, there's a couple of things I don't have to worry about anymore. :goodvibes
