We received a letter yesterday - written in late February. I'll hit the "high points" here:

February 25th - "I can keep track of the date, but not the day of the week because every day feels the same. I received your first letter last night and I was in tears halfway through your letter because it was so good to hear from you. It was so motivating to hear of other people being concerned with me - it just gives me more motivation to do my job. I still haven't got your packages yet, but I know those take a little longer to get here. I'm starting to go crazy without my Triscuits!! Nick also got his first letter from Jenny, so it was a good night for both of us.

The past couple of days have been pretty boring. We've had some bad sand storms, so most of our time has been spent in our tent. I think the most important piece of gear I have right now are my goggles. The wind starts blowing and you can't see but ten feet in front of you.

I haven't been taking many pictures lately because there isn't much to look at right now. I'm saving my film for when we move up north because there will be a lot more photo opportunities. Lately we have been going over what our mission is going to be once we move north. I know that I am going to see things that will be in my head forever and there is nothing that you can do to prepare yourself for that. But, we also know that we will do our job and we won't take any ----- from anyone. I feel so confident with the group of guys I'm with. We all get along with each other, and the more time we spend together, the closer we bond.

Well, I'm going to call it a day and get some sleep. We didn't have a mail call tonight because it was some dumb Kuwait holiday, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow night. I love you guys very much."

Since I've received two phone calls since these letters were written, we know that the mail is flowing and packages are arriving. It's hard to believe but next week, he will have been gone for two months.

I attended a Key Volunteer support meeting last night, and our family support officer told us that they have received the video that our Marines made and we will be able to view it on Saturday at the Family Support Meeting. She also told us that our Marines are on the move. Their mission will be to clear the route for the infantry - mine sweeping, etc. She said that the infantry can't do their jobs without these engineering crews. She did say that we should continue to send mail and packages...that when they return to their base at Camp Coyote, it will be like Christmas for them!!

Thanks guys....just wanted to keep my DIS support staff ;) informed!!!

Thanks Patty. That is a great GREAT letter.

It will for sure be like Christmas, I have 5 boxes heading out today, and more to follow.

There are even some Triscuits in a couple of the boxes.

Thank you for posting the letter. It is nice to know what is going on over there.

I am trying to get my packages ready for the operation military people they sent me.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing.... I had to chuckle about "no mail call":p

I'll be thinking about and praying for your son and his friends!!

I really appricate the time you take to type and share your son's letters.

Question: How often do they go back to their camp to get mail/packages? I am sending packages to Keli's boyfriend-in-law :) (her daughter's boyfriend) and am curious if we keep sending packages as planned, but then if they aren't at camp for serveral months then they may not need some stuff

I will continue to send packages until I am told not to, but I could just see our military men and women coming back to camp right before they come home and they have a million packages to bring back :)

Thanks for sharing all these messages from your son with us. It certainly brings things "closer to home" for me. I appreciate the "inside" look.

Bless your son and your family.

I'm sorry, but I can't tell you how long they'll be on the "move". I don't know if it will be weeks, months. I just don't know. I just know that the family support officer told us to keep sending mail and packages.

Just think what a day it will be when they return to their desert "home" and they have dozens of boxes and bundles of letters waiting.

One sad note....the officer told us last night that there is one soldier in my son's unit who has not received ONE piece of mail. Supposedly, his mother dropped him off on the day he left, didn't stay to see him off, and has sent nothing. Does that not just BREAK YOUR HEART!!! Anyway, we immediately found him some adoptive families....but it still makes me MAD!

I am SO glad that you found some adoptive families for that soldier. Can you imagine? That must be very hard for him.

Thanks for sharing another letter with us Patty. Sometimes just hearing from our soldiers re-enforces how very real this whole situation is. If there are any soldiers that do not have an adoptive family please feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Thanks so much for sharing that with us, Patty. Bless your heart for sharing so freely with us. Your openness and the support you are receiving on this board confirm my belief in the innate goodness in mankind.

God Bless & keep your son while he serves his country. And God Bless you & your family as you await his return.

Oh, I am so glad to hear that care packages mean so much to these troops. When I think about it, I loved getting care packages as a college student, and I CERTAINLY was NOT in harms way or anything like that. It's just simply nice to know people care. I'm so glad I've got 2 adopted soldiers. :) Thanks for sharing your letter. Your son continues to be in my prayers.

That's great Patty!

Thank you for sharing the letters and updates with us, it makes me feel so connected to someone I don't even know.

We have so much stuff shipping out of here on Friday - I can't wait to box it all up!

Thanks for sharing your letter. It's good to know our support really helps the guys over there. It was so much fun picking out stuff for my 2 guys and its great to know it means just as much to them. As for the guy with the sorry mom, I cant believe it. If it was my son I would have to stay untl they were gone and then it would be so hard for me to leave. Im glad you found someone to adopt him...thats is so sad thinking about guys over there with no support.

Hi Patty,

Thank you so much for sharing your son's letter with us. It really hits home. I have been such an advocate on getting the word out to everyone I know to sign up for care packages. I just went to the Post Office yesterday to get the Size 7 Priority Mail boxes. Just a reminder to everyone, they're free!!! I also picked up the customs declaration to fill out ahead of time. I will have several care packages (including 1 with Tricuits in it) by the end of the weekend :) I'm so happy to hear others have adopted that poor soldier!!! May God Bless your son and all the other Troops that are serving to proctect our country!!!

Patty, what kind of film does you son's camera use? i would like to send him some in the next package so that he doesn't have to worry about "saving it". :D

He has my old Canon 35mm camera. I think he took 400 speed film with him, but 200 speed would also work great for the outdoor photos that I'm sure he's taking.

Thanks for your thoughtfulness!! ;)

Thank you so much for sharing that with us. I don't know how to express my feelings....so I will just say how proud I am of your son and each and every man and woman in our armed forces.

Glad to hear how he's doing. My friend's 4th graders are writing letters to send to him! I'm sure these letters will be very amusing!

Bobby's older sister is a 5th grade teacher and her kids have all written to him. I LOVED reading those letters before we mailed them.

The funniest thing was that the boys wrote one paragraph and the girls wrote a full page.:D
