Paula Abdul Takes Enbrel for Arthritis, Not for RSD

RSDSA received the following memo from Daniel J. Wallace, MD, FACP, FACP, Paula Abdul's Physician.

Thank you for your note, but I must clear up one misunderstanding which was published and perhaps you can help our office.

First, Paula has been treated with Pamidronate for her RSDS.

Second, she is on Enbrel for an inflammatory arthritis, which is unrelated to her RSDS.

The patient has waived HIPAA rules and allowed me to explain this to you.

Just to clarify that the article is wrong...Enbrel is NOT an "anti-inflammatory" technically.
Enbrel is considered a biologic response modifier, it works by decreasing the amount of a certain protein related to inflammation, the Tumor Necrosis Factor. Everyone needs TNF, but it is though that those with inflammatory arthritis have too much TNF. Enbrel captures the excess TNF before it can go to work causing inflammation.

Well, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. If she really does have this condition, maybe she's just happy when she's pain free and acting loopy is her thing.

I've used Enbrel for a while now and I sure hope I don't act like that! I think that's a lame excuse for her use.

Why are we being so judgmental on Paula? I cannot imagine being in the type of pain that she describes, and I am sure she is thrilled to be pain free after so long. I think we should all just thank our lucky stars that we do not have to suffer as she has.

Interesting to see that someone in the public eye has RSD. Lets hope more awareness of this condition is now forthcoming.
