Got this on an email:

WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way I was going to lay a bunch of junk like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But....

I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet--we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves! And there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter--with a pen!--and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

And there were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to go to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or we had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over some part of it and mess all up!

You want to hear about hardship? We didn't have fancy stuff like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was it could be your boss, your Mom, a collections agent, you didn't know!!! You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

And we didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square! You had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! A tall guy sat in front of you, you were screwed! And sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 10 channels and there was no onscreen menu! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!

And there was no Cartoon Network! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning... ...D'ya hear what the heck I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it
too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in 1984!

:earboy2: :earboy2: :earboy2: :earboy2:

Here, Here!

I know where your coming from baby!

May I add something else?

You forgot to mention that when your father wanted to see what was on a different channel he would yell for you to come downstairs and change it for him. With your hand! On a knob! AND if he didn't like THAT program, he would call you to come down again 2 minutes later!

Kids these days!................

I love this.

Man, it used to piss me off so bad when the DJ would talk over the beginning of the song.

LOL. Me too! But it was always perfect when you liked the next song and they mixed it in just right!

Oh my goodness! That just cracked me up and brought back the memories.
It used to make me mad when you sat by the radio all day long and than the phone would ring. You answer it and someone trying to sell you something. You run back to the radio and of course they were playing the song you had been waiting for.

:(

Yeah, we had car phones, but if you werent in your car..it didnt help at all. And answering machines were these HUGE boxes that had the tapes you had to hold the button to erase.:p

And we had Apple Computers...it took 5-7 minutes to load.

What I hated most about going to the library to do a research project- CARD CATALOGS!

And remember even before VCRs were popular in classrooms, the film strips (this goes back before just our generation) and how the teachers would get all flustered when the film would break...the film about the red balloon, and then of course the Disney (usually Goofy) educational ones???

:p

Edited to add: How about when you wanted to eat? You actually had to use the stove!! No microwave popcorn for us! Heck, no microwave!!

our car phone consisted of going to a phone in a parking lot or on a corner of a street. Then you could talk into it from your car:p

Actually when we were kids we were outside from morning to night with breaks to eat--now days you have to pull the kids teeth to spend an hour outside!!

:o Um.. yeah, back then we could make harmless prank phone calls at our sleep overs and the person didn't have caller ID or *69 so we wouldn't get busted! :o (no flames!)

OH MY, I too would get so mad at trying to tape my favorite songs on the radio. Fingers poised over the pause button to un-pause it and then those darn DJ's would talk over all the beginning music until the singing started! :teeth:

Anther thing to add:

If you had certain PC's, some of the programs came on cassette tape, and would seemingly take hours to load!!! :p

Of couse, with the CD's of today, all you have to do now is install the program in your PC and it's ready to be played!!!!

Kids today!!! Yeesh!!! :teeth: ;)

<font color=navy>You, too!!!! :teeth:

I tell my kids that I was my dad's remote control, but he used to call me upstairs to turn the knob.

Wow....how young are you people??? Atari didn't come out until I was almost a senior in high school!! And Apple Computers??? Try COMMODORE 64!! It was just a keyboard.... no monitor or memory..... to use it you hooked it up to your portable black and white tv!! VCRs became popular when I was in COLLEGE!! I think this thread should be entitled just "For those who grew up in the late 80's"!.........:p ..................P
