I have always enjoyed Disney as an adult, but never had that urge to go back every year. I have taken my kids when they were younger (like 5 year old and younger), and they never really had a deep appreciation about it. No long lasting memories for them. Our last trip had been in 2019 and my kids don't even remember much of anything. When we told them we were going in Feb 2022, they were not very excited. Not because they were brats, but because they really did not remember much of Disney (too young).
That changed 1 month ago. My boys are now 9 and 6 years old. We went to WDW the second week of February and it was the best family trip we ever had. They were old enough to appreciate everything, from the rides to the atmosphere. Looking at their faces, laughing during rides, excited during fireworks, was absolutely priceless. They would hug me at times during the day saying "thank you daddy, this is the best day ever".
It was very tiring for me and my wife, having to coordinate everything (genie plus, ILL, ADR etc.), specially staying off site. However, it was SO worth it. The memories created with my family were special. The long lines, all the planning, the driving, the expenses, were so worth it. I definitely had fun myself, but most of my fun was knowing my kids were having a special week. That feeling is hard to describe, but if you are a parent, you probably know what I am talking about.
I already booked my next vacation for Feb 2023. Not because of Tron, or GoG, or food/etc, but because of how appreciative and happy my kids were. They still talk about the amazing time we had last month. They ask about upcoming new rides and how awesome the trip was. This is what Disney is all about (at least this is what I see, specially as a Dad). This is gonna be the first time we will be staying at a Disney resort (We booked 1 week at Boardwalk villas), mainly because of my kids. I want them to have the full Disney experience.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my satisfaction. I know parks are not as they used to. They are too crowded, too expensive, but when you look at your children's happiness, all of that becomes irrelevant.
As someone who has spent a lot of money on materialistic things, seeing my kids growing, I changed my perspective. I now want to collect memories, not things.
Cheers!
