We are thinking of asking my BIL and his family to join us on an upcoming trip to Disney. I believe by the time the trip gets here he would of been made vice principal.....I don't want to ask them directly because I want them to be surprised when we do ask....but how difficult is it to get time off IF SCHOOL IS NOT OFFICALLY CLOSED?
I'm thinking it would be best to go when the kids are off for a few days, plus half days.....
I know it would be easier to probably go in June but I'm afraid it might be to hot.....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We are DVC members so we also have to keep in mind the best time to travel with the amount of points we have....unfortunatley we dont have enough points to travel during christmas break.

I am a teacher, and in our district it is difficult to get time off that isn't a scheduled vacation. We do have 3 personal days but it is frowned upon to take them for a vacation. If we don't have any personal days, we need to make a formal request to the superintendent and school board to get approved for unpaid time off. Our principal and vice principal get a little bit of vacation time because they are suppose to work some weeks in the summer. Depending on the size of the school, they may have the time but it might be very difficult for them to be out of the building. We only have one vice principal and he rarely takes time off because often time everything goes to heck when he is gone. I hope your BIL and his family can go with you. Good luck.

If he is a teacher he may have a hard time getting off; at my school, we have to use personal days and pay for the sub. However, a VP could be an etirely different story; they tend to be on a 12 month contract and therefore get vacation. Our VP is currently in FL and our principal just got back from Vegas.

I think you may need to not make this a surprise trip. He may very well need to let the school know far in advance AND he will know best when it is ok to take off.

As a school counselor, I was not given ANY vacation days. Their response was, "If the 16 weeks we give you off each year don't work for you, then perhaps you need to be in a different line of work!"

Plus, he will be in a new position and may not want to take off much the first year as he is learning the ropes.

I would talk to him and forgo the surprise element.

It is difficult to get off during the school year when you are a teacher. I would say it is much harder as VP. My VPs have had very little time off during the school year.

I agree that you are going to have to talk to him and forego the surprise. It will depend on his contract and his district. Some APs have 11-month contracts, in that case it will be almost impossible to get time off. Others have 12-month contracts, there might be a little leeway there, but really the school board expects vacation time to be taken when school is not in session. My Dmom was an AP for many years (11-month). If school was in session, she was expected to be there.

Hope it works out. I think that the more time for planning, the better your chances. Good luck!

It does depend on the school. Our principal does NOT get "vacation" days during the school year. She gets 2 weeks to use during the summer. During the school year, she gets our vacation days.

Maybe it would be best to tell them NOW and forego the surprise. ??

My father was an elementary school principal.

All of our WDW vacations happened in July.

Coinsidence? I think not. ;)
